My parents are divorced and on good terms. They got divorced when I was 5, currently 24. I'm not fucked up, my life didn't suck, they had joint custody and my dad was there once a week and every other weekend.

They split cause my dad was a mentally abusive, overly critical asshole and my mom couldn't deal with it. I couldn't either, but I did once a week and every other weekend.

My dad has calmed down quite a bit since I moved out and became my own man, but I can still see his tendencies starting to wear on his current wife. My dad is just not a guy you spend tons of time with unless you want to be mercilessly judged and heckled for every 'wrong' move you make.

Is that his fault? Yeah, probably. Do I hate him for it? No, it's who he is. He wants me to be the best I can be, and he doesn't want me giving society any reason to not give me a chance. He thinks everyone around him is as judgemental and critical as he is.

Do I hate my mom for divorcing him? Fuck no. I would have divorced him too if I could have.

Point being, my parents split and I'm not insane, depressed, or anything of the sort. Just got engaged, in fact.

I used to think that my parents' divorce had no real effect on me. "B-but they're still kind of friends!" I'd tell myself. And it was true. It wasn't a terribly messy divorce, and there was never any bad blood between them. They just didn't want to be together anymore. No big deal.

But now, twenty something years later after their divorce, I can see that it affected me. Not that I cry about it or blame every shortcoming of mine on the divorce or anything, but there are a few things that I just know I took on after the divorce, certain insecurities and things.

My mom got knocked up with me when she was 23, biological father was an abusive alcoholic but they were apparently in love before she got pregnant and she left him because she wanted to keep me safe from his drunken rages. Thank fuck she left that guy, he has like 6 or 7 other kids all with different moms, buddy has no idea what a condom is.

Mom married the guy I call my 'Dad' when I was around 7, they had a child, my little brother, who's 8 years younger than me. They stayed married until I was 13 and my mom decided she'd be happier on her own. Big fucking mistake, turns out being a housewife for 6 years and just painting and making home movies doesn't really set you up to be financially stable. She gets around 1000 a month from dad's child support, which pays the rent and she squanders her actual earnings, buys lots of booze and weed and cigarettes and $400 boots, owns 3 mac laptops and an iPad for some reason and probably annually spends $1000 or more on makeup. She very very rarely cooked and would just order us takeout all the time, my brother is obese as fuck cus he just gets fed shit all the time and doesn't know any better. She never cleaned up the place and when she did buy groceries half of them would be expensive vitamin supplements and get-slim-quick formulas. I was living with them until around a year ago when she started to really go nuts because Dad couldn't keep paying as much child support (his business partner zucked him and he got kicked out of the company he created). She was actually fucking crazy and would start yelling matches over nothing, and would sometimes just cry and sob and feel sorry for herself instead of trying to fix her few small problems. I've been trying to help my bro get fit and healthy and start eating right and I'm always telling her she needs to feed him healthier meals but she's fucking useless I swear to god. My bro sleeps over 3 or 4 nights a week and I cook for him and take him out on runs and play Pokemon Go with him.

I also want to say something about how we hold up single moms as this inspirational, virtuous group of wonderful hard working people. When the truth is that more often than not, they're single because they made bad decisions that led to their children not getting the resources and attention of two parents, literally starting them at 50% capacity compared to the kids with two parents. It also really fucks with young boys, getting raised without a father gives you all kinds of confidence issues and abandonment hangups

You know, an interesting crackpot theory that my conspiracy-obsessed buddy told me is that the cultural and media attitude towards single mothers being something to aspire to and respect and value, is a plot by the illuminati or whoever to destroy the nuclear family. Because of the financial incentive to divorce your husband when you have a couple kids, you'll get a certain amount equivalent to his earnings so you won't lose out when you kick his ass out. Back in the day women would stay with their husband not just because of love and family, but also because they were the financial foundation of the family and were providing the resources that kept things liveable and pleasant. The idea is to make the state your family, not your actual family. Have a great deal of kids being raised with barely any parenting because the single moms are busy with work and housework and don't have time to properly raise their kids so they take more influence and education about their world view from the media rather than their own family's values and ideals
