So I'm strongly considering becoming an officer or taking a job with the army. I understand if and why you disdain both or either. Negative comments are unnecessary, but to be expected.

I am choosing a new career path as i desire a different occupation so i can separate from memories of my ex whom i lived with over five years.

I have a S.T.E.M. degree. Money has never been that important as i am set longterm regardless of my career, I'd rather not get into explaining that. the army is offering about 60k/year plus up to 40k signing bonus. (bonus probably will be half that since im delaying). The army job is minimum of two years and would possibly land me in Afghanistan. The police jobs I'm looking at start at around 56k. My current career is about helping protect public health and would be more lucrative longterm if i just stuck with it while extending my education. However i'm fairly assertive and think I would be an excellent officer. Not to mention i have the most keen sense of smell of anyone I've met. Also either path wouldn't necessarily exclude me from returning to my current path.

So which would you choose in my position? Also which will appreciate my obsession with physical fitness more? (I'm becoming pretty jacked)

I need good advice from those with experience, not confident I'm going to get it here.

60k? Lmao. No.

if you want the law to support you in being an absolute dick to everyone you meet then go cop
if you want the support you being a dick to your subordinates and your superiors being a dick to you, then go army
>>
>>739550993
>S.T.E.M. degree
you can go OCS and become a 2nd lieutenant in the army
direct pay is not as good as cops
but you also get allowances for housing, food, and uniforms which will bring the two about equal
>>
what? no

as someone who did this it was a bad idea

Look into being a Federal agent. Plenty of agencies have a law enforcement branch.

badge and a gun, and you don't have to deal with the dindunuffins' or towelheads, or the idiots in the military who got promoted just because they could run fast
>>
>>739551403
It requires a science degree, talked to a recruiter.
>>739551615
Ugh this is the narrow perspective i expected. I don't have to be a dick as a cop. I would actually like to improve community relations.
I do expect that the army atmosphere would be more abrasive to my assertive personality type though.

no
but between pressure from your superior officers and fellow cops
and having a job that is basically just interacting with the worst of humanity all day every day
you will become a massive dick to everyone you meet, wether you plan to or not

I appreciate the advice, but i think the position i am looking at would better suit my long-term career goals based on the job title.
>>739552142
Can you be more specific about your experience? I'm not looking to be a cop in a bad area, there are many jobs available in nice suburbs.
I'm not sure about becoming a fed, sounds like it would take me too far in a different direction. I'll look into it though.
>>

Police can make a bit of money in cyber. Army Intel has a lot of fun possibilities. Classified isn't always new I do. Go for the gold. Police is usually crap pay. DoD opens a lot of doors.
>>
>>739550993
Police or any LEO 100% seriously fuck army you'll be bored as fuck and be a jaded alcoholic within 2 years. Also there's no good wars and shit going on to go to.

>>

>>
>>739552822
even in nice area you deal with two types of people
>criminals
>criminals that instead of dealing with shit on their own decide to call the cops on their fellow criminals
no decent human being calls the cops
they either deal with shit on their own or call a laywer
>>
>>739552822
Law Enforcement here.

How old are you? If you're young enough, you could do both. Police departments love ex military guys. Having a Bachelors is even better on top of that.

You might want to try getting into private security in a community setting (basically, private police) which isn't easy, but if you can find a place it's good to basically experience the police job without signing onto a department and having them dump tons of $$$ into you for academy training, etc.

Lots of guys can't handle the job, doesn't make you any less manly or anything. Honestly no matter what you're going to have days you think it's just not worth it. But there are also plenty of days you literally save peoples lives and that is a good feeling.
>>
>>739552860
LEO is shit. Badge and a gun is fun, yes. But you are worthless outside that.
>>
Do both be a MP
>>
>>739552825
Money isn't the objective. I know that sounds crazy.
>>739552860
Ya i know, but I'm not going to likely be in combat. I would be supporting my fellow man in a non violent capacity. >>739553063
I can handle the training of either.
>>
>>739552822
Stem, then Army OCS. Lot of b.s. for not enough pay- I'm more of a glorified manager than a scientist. Air Force/Navy have more opportunities for actually using your brain than Army.

With the Feds remember that if it's illegal and crosses state lines there's usually an agent that handles it. The FDA has armed agents that bust companies who make tainted pills and a neighbor's daughter works at the Treasury tracking down terrorist money.
>>
>>739550993
Got around 3 and a half years of army here. Depending on what MOS you pick, you can open up a lot of doors as others have said. If you go into a job that requires a security clearance and get approved for one, you can use that clearance in the civilian workforce afterward. If you're degree is at least a bachelor's, you can either join as a Specialist (E4), or go straight to OCS. Try to get any medical stuff you want done approved while you're in also. I just got PRK eye surgery last month for free.
>>
>>739552142
I though you had to be in law enforcement for a few years before you could go federal?
>>
>>739553145
So you're saying army? Or both?
>>739553189
I'm a decent human being and I've had to call the cops multiple times. Once i got a junky who was shooting up horse while driving and swerving into oncoming lanes.
>>739553192
I'm young enough to do both, but would rather stick with one as my plan for now. If i change my mind down a path ill create another thread asking you. ;)
>>739553192
Don't private security usually have police or military experience?
>>
>>739553433
Ok non combat job I think you should try be a loadmaster for a chinook if army or fixed wing aircraft and go air force. Probably one of the best jobs in the military and you actually go and do shit and it looks fun as fuck, plus you get to man the rear gun if needed. I think they get operational service a bit, dropping supplies and stuff to shitty countries.
>>
>>739553192
I agree. You have to deal with the lowest common denominator as LEO. I work with a lot of LEO on the FED side. A lot of effort and ego... I can appreciate that. I qualify on the range too. The future (comfort and pay) is not on the street (humint). It's cybint and osint
>>
>>739553600
That's what I'm afraid would happen. I would feel underutilized if I felt like a manager.
>>

Money isn't the objective.... what is? Making a difference? Domestic distutes don't make a difference. Stopping a Russian spook does.
>>
>>739554291
Officers are just managers and work in offices all day.
>>
>>739553997
>I'm a decent human being and I've had to call the cops multiple times.
did you interact with the cops?
if not then you can't count your experience as proof that cops deal with decent people
and believe me, it becomes very obvious who are calling the cops bc they want to be "friends" with the cops or want to be a cop themself but are to chicken or broken to do it
and it quickly gets annoying as fuck
>>
>>739553997
Kinda depends. A lot of them do, but you can get into it without it if you get certified. It's easier to get into it if you have prior experience, sure.

Just sayin', if it's an option, might be worth looking into. There are communities (not many, but they do exist) that have basically private police forces in everything but the title. They operate in a smaller area (think 3-5 neighborhoods) but literally do all the police work that cops would normally do for the area.

It's kinda like training wheels for becoming a cop if you can find a job like that. If you find yourself enjoying it / being able to handle the stress then you can just imagine multiplying that by like 10 and that's what being a cop is like.
>>
>>739554140
I know I'm going to get hate for thjs, but i don't like heights. I can handle roller coasters and being on the empire state building, but have experienced no joy from either.

>>739555132
Different states do it differently, but usually you have to get some kind of basic training (20 hours) and then another 20 hours for Firearms training, total of 40 hrs

Then you get a permanent employee card for your state, and you'll be issued a firearms card whenever you get hired at a private security firm. Can't get it without working for someone.

Usually you can get the training at a local community college or seek it out privately. A lot of firearms/private detective instructor type people offer that kind of stuff.

For one, it's a good move. I was going to choose between being a barber, or law enforcement. Hair will always grow, crime will always be an issue. BUT cops as well as officers in the military are paid shit. So I took an alternative route. Now there are hard-asses who work for private military organizations, I am not one of them. I went the watered-down version. All I do is work on a military base, as an armed civilian, and search commercial vehicles for explosives, drugs, contraband, etc. I do this for $38 an hour, full time, with PTO and health benefits.

Now is it rough-neck back-breaking work? Yeah. But I get to work outside, the faces change, and I get to carry a gun and shit... and bro, it's so god damn easy to find things in people's trucks. Luckily I've never had to deal with any terrorism stuff, but I've found plenty of weed, meth, coke, etc. Why? Because people are fucking idiots and want to bring it on to a federal base.

So my suggestion? Look into fringe law enforcement fields. Pays more, don't have to deal with as much political mumbo jumbo. And if you are good, you get offered those risky positions overseas. I never took any chance with it, I am a huge gaping walking vagina.

Look into courtroom security. Our local court security is through the sheriffs department - you work for the sheriff's dpt, but you're not a sworn officer and don't go through the normal academy.

Kind of a middle ground, again.
>>
>>739550993
Go into the military if you enjoy that kind of bullshit.

Both of these careers are shit jobs. The difference is that if you go into the military you will get decent training and end up with a future afterwards.

If you succeed in the military then you have the option of progressing, making really excellent money in the private sector, or going into politics etc if you're into that sort of thing. If you don't find yourself to be very successful then you could still go into police work after.

Most police forces are full of ex-military guys anyway. Mediocre, ex-military of above average intelligence should be running most local police forces.

I agree with you wholeheartedly that there needs to be a LOT more training.

They only make you do 8 hours a year remedial shit I believe.

Depending on what job you work, you might learn what you need to know on the job. But that's the problem with it..... some security jobs literally do police work - and they need a LOT more training. Some security jobs just stand around and literally do nothing except look pretty all day.

Security is a weird field that needs more regulation.

the politics of cop unions destroys any possibility of breaking down the blue line

it is very obvious from what they say about the union's political platform and how they feel about civilians they meet on the job
there is very much an "us versus them" attitude in law enforcement

Lol you think you don't need law enforcement? You wouldn't last a day without them. Also im from your generation you cunt. I have power regardless of whether some poor angsty teenager posting anonymously says so. >>739560228

I think all jurisdictions that vote no LE should live 6 months without. After a few month purge, life would be easier for LE. Well, after a month of firefights with the thug leftovers. The rest of the snowflakes will have melted.
>>
>>739550993
I would say join the military.... but not the army.

Honestly I would go air force or navy.

They booth have a good mp program that would fit what you wanted.

After you could go police and get a better job doing it because of past training.

My dad was an army drill Sargent. The army seems to chew people up. Just my 2 cents.

become officer joe cool and let shit slide with weed offenders

Marines sleep in ug out trenches.

Army sleeps in tents

Navy sleeps on boats

Air force sleep in air conditioned apartments with running water and hot showers. After a nice bed.

Op here
>>739561396
No... I don't want them to die for being ignorant on the matter of LE.
>>739561397
I guess ill check out navy too. Thanks.

If you become a cop, I hope you get shot on the job you fucking snitch.

OP ever hear of CID? Army fag here. You work in civilian clothes and after you done with your contract you have a good chance becoming a special agent. My next unit after I leave Korea is a MP Unit.

I'm in the same boat OP, in college now at 21 and its a drag, taking law enforcement classes though is good fun. I want to do Air Force or Security / Police, while i continue my education in business and criminal law. Should I just man up and join the Air Force as a MP for 4 years, get all the benefits that i can, and then leave and maybe start my own business or join the Police? Any input greatly valued

Yep. Or OSI AF. However, they are not real cops... What I mean by that is the training sucks unless you can get on a joint Fed task force and the cases are not real shithole people like "real" cops. Lol... just different dirt...

i need to go to bed. I am actually shocked at how few haters posted in this thread. Thanks for the inciteful responses guys. Im going to make a pros and cons board tomorrow. Also a positive about being a cop that none of you mentioned is i would still have the ability to see my many close friends and family.

>>739564082
Just don't go Fed then... They ship you out

If you want to stay fit, Army is definitely the way to go. However, there is the branch of SWAT and Riot Control, and those require you to be fit as well. But besides that, pros and cons of both:

>Army Pros:
Military Service
Stay fit (since you brought that up)
Military Benefits

>Army Cons:
Dying
PTSD
Losing a limb

In the Army you'll probably see more action. You'll deal with things such as death, blood, blown up people. With the current war with ISIS going down, I project you won't be deploying as much.

Police Pros:
Not very active, rarely see action
Mostly handle domestic cases such as crashes, robberies, hot pursuits, and occasionally drug busts depending where you live
Subdivision of police to join such as SWAT, Riot Control
Able to move to Military Police expeditiously

Police Cons:
Occasionally bad publicity
Not as much action
Will be sitting in a cruiser for most of the time

Police is pretty mellow. If you live in Chicago then you'll probably see more action. (huhuh)

The choice is yours, /b/ro. I wish you the best of luck.

>>739564443

Thank you. ill definitely put those on the pros and cons list. Im not planning of going anywhere tense like Chicago..

Goodnight all.

You sound more suited to be a mall security guard.
>>
>>739550993
What made you choose the army? Pretty terrible choice since you have a stem degree.
>>
>>739550993
Neither you idiot.

Join the Air Force as an Officer. Shit is easy af.
>>
>>739564633
this faggot is going to be an officer in the army doing something with science, hes not gonna see death, blood or blown up people. he has a higher chance of responding to something fucked being a police officer.
