Good question.

1. They do not work with dimmer switches at all
2. You can use a traditional on/off switch but when the switch is off you won't be able to control the wirelessly. Maybe that's a big deal for you, maybe it isn't.
3. The hue dimmer switches are worth it. They will not only allow you to turn your lights off without losing wireless control but they can be set to activate 5 different light settings as well as dim and brighten the bulbs.

I personally use voice commands to control them most of the time but the switches still get used everyday. The only downside is the price. Save your receipts for warranty.
