But in order to not break the law, the best I can do is prepare for a situation factoring in my difficult-to-access firearms.

I keep a baseball bat behind the front door incase of unexpected unpleasant guests. The safe is in my bedroom closet. If I ever suffered a home invasion, I'd retreat to my room, close and lock the door, grab the keys hanging on the wall (theres a rack of 4 hooks all with keys on them, the safe keys blend in inconspicuously), open the one half of the safe with the one key, get the shotty out first, then unlock the trigger lock, then open the other side of the safe (each side opens with a different key, all safe keys and triggerlock keys are on the same keyring) to retrieve my ammo, load up, call the cops.

God forbid if you shoot a home invader in Canada, whether their intent be to rob you or kill you, even if you can prove they intended you harm, even if you can prove you could see they were armed at the time of the incident, if you shoot a home invader you are going to jail for a very very long time, cause "they had uh difficult upbringing" and should be shown empathy.

All the valuable shit I own is in my room, I could give a shit about the TV in the living room. So they'd have to bust into my room, where I'd be holed up, in order for me to bother with firing on them.

It's silly to have to go through so much trouble and I know I'm only one of two people I know who actually keeps their guns locked away "properly" so whats the fuckin point of makin it law if no one bothers.

I have one of the better legal setups I think because in Canada, the only shot you have at not taking the long dick of the law for defending yourself in your home, is if you retreat as far back, and put as many locked doors between yourself and the invader as you can, before engaging the invader. They have to pursue you through the house and remove obstacles like locked doors to reach you for a court to consider for a moment that you really, really, had no option but to fire at them.
The layout of my place happens to be good for this. Otherwise I don't know what I'd do.

I don't believe it should be legal to keep your firearms laying around the house, accessible by anyone. But boy, would I like to get rid of the trigger locks and store my ammo behind the same lock as my firearms. I'd feel much more comfortable with my access speed if that were the case.

The thing that really burns my ass is we're supposed to keep guns locked up, sure, but we're supposed to keep the ammo stored seperately from the firearms as a suicide prevention tactic. They say that suicide by firearm is usually an impulsive decision and that the more time it takes you to be able to blow your head off once you've decided to, the more likely you are to change your mind before you get the job done.
So my setup, where my ammo is stored like 8 inches away from my guns, but behind a seperate lock, is completely legal, and is supposed to keep me from killing myself. All it does is increase the risk an invader busts through 2 doors to get to me before I get prepared. Stupid as hell.
