Bureaucrats and politicians don't police anything, and that's not what net neutrality even is, dummy.

When the railroads were built, the companies who built them would start to charge more for certain cargo, or charge less to certain companies who helped them or paid them. Look up how Rockefeller got his oil monopoly. It was ruled that railroad traffic should be given equal access in order to protect market competition. Not all government oversight is bad. That would be silly to assume.
This is the same thing happening with the internet. The ISPs have essentially become the only ones who control infrastructure, and are demanding the right to throttle bandwidth for websites they, or their best customers (hint: not you or me) don't like. And then, if you want your old internet back, they're going to charge you more for the shit you already had. You're basically giving away future money to them for no reason other than you're afraid of bureaucracy.
>>
You guys are idiots. Lets dox a guy who is anti-net neutrality. That will make him support our cause. You are feeding his fears on the issue.

Ah, so unregulated, my internet speeds have gone for 58kps to 50mbps in 20 years, an increase of a thousandfold, but if we get the FCC involved, the internet will stop being to slow to increase speeds.
You're solving a problem that doesn't exist.
How about instead of adding layers of bureaucracy, you increase competition by banning local monopolies where people only have one choice of service providers?
I'm pretty sure if people had 10 choices for their ISP, the ones who pull shitty stuff would fail.
I don't know why i ask - anyone who wants more government doesn't even value competition.

Pai has been an advocate for less regulation during his tenure on the FCC. He is seen as a closer ally to broadcasters than other members of the FCC.[15] In testimony before the U.S. House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Communications and Technology on July 10, 2012, he warned about the dangers of regulatory uncertainty and the need for the FCC to keep pace with the dynamic communications sector.[16

Oh yeah why not just have a bunch of startups go city to city and lay their own fucking fiber optics and cable lines. THEN, they can build a customer base and start getting revenue. Yeah, why don't 10 startups just go do that? What a great fucking idea that only you have ever thought of. You should go ask someone with any knowledge of business why they don't just go do that. Congratulations on your epiphany, Einstein.
>>
>>739180954

'Net Neutrality' means that the government prevents companies for fettering access to the Internet. That means they cannot block content, they cannot throttle speeds, they cannot prefer certain content in searches, they can't charge extra if you play games or stream, they can't make different 'packages' like they do for cable TV....

All of these things are things that have happened or companies have tried to do in the past. Net Neutrality basically means that the Internet is protected as a communications utility. The oversight prevents companies from fucking you.

'If your ISP is fucking you choose a different one free market duh' except 40% of Americans only have one fucking ISP and an additional 30% only have TWO and the majority of those work together to fix rates and policies.

So keep thinking it's a liberal bullshit agenda.

You're really stupid, as you accept monopolies as natural and reject the idea of competition outright while supporting more government.
If your ISP blocks or chokes Netflix, switch ISPs. If you CAN'T switch, that's because your local bureaucrats have created a monopoly, probably to a donor company. You fear unfettered capitalism, so you embrace crony capitalism, which is always worse.
>>
>>739183061
banning monopolies isn't a form of bureaucracy, you twat.
>>
>>739183800
Correct. You can not do the same with the internet because the infrastructure isn't standardized, and it's mostly owned by the companies who built it. I agree that we should do it more like the energy sector, but we aren't and without net neutrality we're going to get fucked even worse if we don't start treating the internet as a public utility.

And how do you avoid monopolies on things that require expensive infrastructure, like internet cables? It's not like you're going to have a lot of companies rushing to lay cable in every fucking town.
>>
>>739182189

we're going to get screwed either way, either by corporations or by the government. Or, in my case, being in Oklahoma, the Oklahoma Corporation Commission will screw us first.

Here in my little town, we have Suddenlink cable for our Internet provider. Because of the OK corporation commission, they have been able to sit back and let Oklahoma networks stagnate because Oklahoma has no incentives or mandates to better the network infrastructure, and in my town's case, hinders it by over-regulation of network interconnectivity; i.e. our network's backhaul over microwave. We get a whopping 3mb down, 512k up.

20 miles away, across the border into Texas, the small town there (on Suddenlink) has 100mb service for a cheaper package than we pay.

In writing to our illustrious government, I was told that Oklahoma is being cautious in allowing companies to connect willy-nilly, and that it actually helps Oklahomans because the more regulated networks hamper computer crimes.

We've had the same corporation commissioner for 30+ years. He was 40 or so when he was first elected back in the late 80s. He has no clue about networks, yet he is allowed to hamper progress. I can't wait for the boomers to go away.
>>

>you accept monopolies as natural and reject the idea of competition outright while supporting more government.

You're going to have to show where you got that idea because right now it looks like you're back to posting irrelevant shit just to steer the argument to a place where you can make your own irrelevant point.
>>
>>739183800
In that system you are paying for the production and capacity of the electricity transmitted over the shared infrastructure. In communications, you are paying for the path of the transmissions that comprises the infrastructure, the routers and cabling owned by the ISPs. You are suggesting a false equivalence.

4chan is a counterculture
During the bush years it was like that because it was normal to be conservative but now it is cool to be a liberal
>>
>>739184194
But consider. Where I live, the phone company has fibre optic internet service in several suburbs, but not in mine, not because it's too costly for them to lay the line, but because our town authority won't allow it - so we have a choice between cable internet through what used to be Time Warner and DirecTV. In some local areas, you have one choice only. And again, not because the companies don't want access - it is very cheap for them to put down fibre optic, for example, relative to what they would make, and the phone company is hardly some start-up out of someone's garage. But they aren't even allowed to do it.
Does it not seem even a little naive to believe that if we put the internet in the hands of the politicians owned by donors that they won't shape policy to favor their donors?
>>
>>739184098
In summary.

Accept unfettered capitalism so that you can petition and lobby for change against your local bureaucrats. Forfeit your access to several Internet Service Providers who are required by law to abstain from, say, choking access to Netflix, in exchange for one large monopoly that has been given the freedoms to do as it pleases with not only your access to content, but the freedoms to use your personal information as their leisure. In addition, prevent smaller entities from accessing or providing service to you, the consumer, as they would be muscled out by the larger Internet Service Providers who already, for lack of better words, own local internet infrastructure, like cable.

Goodness me, I cannot see what is wrong with that picture. It's as if freedom of choice and holding companies to a standard is, well, wrong.

My sweet summer child.

It's almost like companies need some oversight in situations like you describe so they can't fuck people over. I agree that competition would alleviate the problem, except that competition is not happening and will not happen in over 2/3 of the entire country. So oversight is needed to allow full access to the internet.

You don't know me. My only fear is ignorance, and my only ideology is reason. So you can just shut the fuck up. From a fully objective standpoint it is far better to continue to operate the Internet as it is now, rather than allow it to degenerate into a rampant cash grab.

And as far as local corruption, you are correct, but net neutrality isn't a local policy, it's a federal policy, and it doesn't deal with which companies are where but rather to the extent the internet can be controlled by providers. Even if you got rid of net neutrality protections the same localized bullshit would still occur.
