Interestingly enough, the inverse of that is actually a meme, or was for a few years. Was in /eog/, the eve online general on vg. Think two things caused it. The first was that people would ironically greentext common arguments (usually twisted slightly into strawmans) but without linking a post (to make fun of people holding that position), and then someone would respond "who are you quoting?". The second was that it was a pretty slow thread, so sometimes people didn't bother linking to reply to people because it was right at the end anyway. Someone got a stick up their ass about not linking replies and mentioned it a couple of times, then when nothing changed he (maybe other too) just started posting "who are you quoting?" to all unlinked reply posts they saw. Of course this had the opposite effect of making more people omit their reply links to trigger the who are you quoting fags. Things went swimmingly from there, with a lot of unlinked replies.

Which is, like, the opposite of linking a post without replying.
