Most people have a certain desire for religion, for the occult, this is why religion never died out in the west (things like scientology certainly wouldn't work if people looked at it from a logical perspective), and probably never will. That being said religion can be replaced with other things, in russian occupied germany this was communism for a lot of people. My mother once cited one of her classmates who proudly announced how he would shoot his own parents if they were to cross the border. That was religious extremism - without any religion. From a societies point of view he would have developed better if he were raised christian instead of soviet style.

We have math. Math is the only thing in the universe that can be defined as either true or false. 2 + 2 will ALWAYS be 4. Therefore, math is the closest we can get to the proof of perfect truth. I've always personally considered it a wink from Him.

Then again, it may have nothing to do with any of that. We could simply be a culture growing in a forgotten pitri dish in the western spiral arm of a galaxy just like an infinite number of others. I choose to be comfortable with that. I never met the guy, so given what I can work out for myself, I am very comfortable calling myself an optimistic agnostic.

We all die, so it's not like we're not gonna figure out what happens. It'll either go black, or there'll be a whole lot more. Meanwhile, I'll simply live my life the best I can, be as good and kind as possible, and when the time comes, see what's next, if anything.

That may be true in the end, but we can't predict such things since we lack the technology to do that. It's like someone wrote a computer program to synthesize the lottery numbers. From the outside it would look completely random, but knowing the code would show you otherwise. I don't think that software will ever be written - for computation effort and mapping reasons. Therefore it's a reasonable assumption that the sum of influences we cannot map properly is called "chance".
On a sidenote: I don't like the notion that life is pre-defined, that all comes down to physical exact cause-effect chains. It makes people lazy because they think they can't change what they are.

As for people changing faiths, people choose what to call themselves, the do not have a choice in what information they have already received and what conclusions they have already made.
A basic way of looking at it is to consider the equation of 2+2=?. Everything you've experienced up until now (assuming you're not an idiot and you know what the symbols mean) will lead you to believe what the answer is. You can say it's 5, Q, bitch, or blue, but you can't consciously make yourself truly believe it's anything other than 4.

If you have some way of rationally arguing that you can, I'm happy to hear it. But as far as I can tell, (and I'm not alone on this) true belief is not a choice, it's a culmination of past experiences.
