rugby is a full contact sport where men hit each other at speed and wear no armour,and in which there is nearly constant action for 90 minutes. The one time I watched the superbowl the cameras cut away from the pitch about fifteen minutes before the game ended because it was obvious which side was going to win, and there was a huge fistfight int he background as the commentators talked abotu how the matche (which was not over) had gone. TV ad breaks every ten seconds, even in the middle of the game, reruns of the little action that took place to fill in time between everyone walking about to take up places, and interviews with players who could not sting a word together and were identifiable only by number under the armour and helmets.

ok they are fit - they have to be to carry allthat gear. Ok they are fast - some are near olympic sprint times - but only play for about ten minutes in a game.

Lets be honest, all sports no matter where they originate from have talented fit players involved.

The armor and padding used in American Football is there to reduce chances of injuries occurring, they still happen, but less likely and that is because the athletes are highly paid investments, they sell goods, they are marketable. So in essence American Football is a platform for ad revenue and merchandising that is all, the sport from the early to mid 20th Century is gone.

Rugby isn't a heavy contact sport like American Football, yes there is contact, but it isn't to the levels of running in with your head to knock the fuck out of someone, there is rules in the sport for that, however they are constantly on the move and their endurance levels are greater than their American Football counterparts, and the sport isn't fully used for ad revnue or merchandising, that like Football/Soccer is done by ads placed around the ground and sponsorship deals to be on the kit.

So is one better than the other, no, they are two different sports but with similarities and that is all. However the Americans have reduced their sports to money making and in my opinion ruined everything that way. But America is run by corporations in the Senate and Congress, and if they stay there it will always continue.

American Football Players are better athletes, yes. Rugby Players are better at taking a hit because of the way the game is played.

In terms of "toughness" on which would win a fight it really depends American Footballers are generally pampered rich men who have been brought up to do what they do. Rugby players are thugs who have been through a rough upbringing (Rugby is known as a thugs sport, which is why America wanted to distance themselves from that when they made football) so would probably be better "fighters".

As for the sport itself, it's really down to preference on the effects the differences have. Personally I prefer Rugby as it's got more going on.

The Advertising machine that's wrapped itself around it and baseball is very noticeable outside the US, and is probably in part why it's not overly enjoyed outside the US.
