Anyone who mashes their fruit to make an Old Fashioned is a retard who's never had one.
Any fruit used in the drink should be as a garnish, not to make a puddle of rancid pink bullshit in your glass.
As the name implies, it's the original "cocktail" recipe, and it's nowhere near that hard.

The basic recipe is :
>Whatever liquor you like
>However much sugar dissolved in to counteract the alcohol bite
>a dash of your preferred bitters
Mix together, stir with ice and serve.
That's it.
In its day there were cocktails of this recipe made with whiskey, gin, brandy, rum, and all sorts of other liquors. The whiskey recipe is the one that's survived under the name of "Old Fashioned".

Here's the way I make it:
Whiskey-1.5oz of 100 proof or 2oz of 80 proof whiskey.
Sugar-1tsp sugar or 1/4oz (1-1/2tsp) simple syrup
Bitters-1 or two dashes of you favorite flavor (i like Angostura with bourbon and orange with rye). A little less is better than more.

Dissolve the sugar in the whiskey-simple syrup saves a lot of time here. Add 4 or 5 ice cubes and your dash of bitters, stir for about 30 seconds to get it really cold and you're done.
It really is that simple.

Done right, you should have just enough sugar to make it neither sweet nor bitter and the flavors of both whiskey and bitters should come through, with neither overpowering the other.
