This is the way to tell who's really hungry and who's spanging money for booze or drugs. I had a guy walk up to me and my coworkers while we were on lunch, telling a sob story about how he hasn't eaten in two days and is just trying to get some money for food. I handed him a 6" meatball sub (I'd bought a footlong and was only going to eat one half of it at lunch anyway) and he still stood there trying to bum money. Another time I gave a woman a quarter pounder ($4 for one, 2 for $5) and she was extremely grateful and tore into it immediately. I wouldn't mind giving the woman money, but the guy was obviously bullshitting since he didn't even thank me for the sandwich. Even if I gave away food to someone who wasn't hungry, at least I didn't get swindled into paying for his crack.

But I think every city has its own unique spin on it. Here, you'll be having a smoke/minding your business, and then they will start to hover around you. Once eye contact is made, even for a split second, you hear the inevitable 'ey, brubber...' or 'uhhexcuse me...' and once you hear that, you basically know the question and you respond with 'here, fuck off' or just 'm, fuck off'. But recently its gotten worse, although the key difference is they go off empathy.

I had a dude give me a fucking 5 minute lecture while I was having a smoke last week about his shit, and although he was 10 times more likeable and genuine than most, he actually wanted me to go out of his way to pull 20 from the ATM, break it and then split it. And there was a time when I could be convinced to do that; my brain likes to scream 'YOURE A FUCKING ASSHOLE WHAT IF THAT WERE YOU' and it took awhile to fix. But ultimately, its about being stern. If you show that they upset you, and show annoyance, they'll do the fox/sour grapes and move on to the next person.

I feel sorry for them, they're my fellow man, but for fucks sake my life is on Hard mode too
