To sum up: Anyone who always uses Tor/Tails with the high security setting, only saves to an encryted memory stick, and hides that stick well, is pretty damn safe.

The first SSD drives didn't erase data at all, they just marked the section as available for new data. The reason being that any overwrite puts significant wear on the device, and shortens its lifespan. On these drives there is no way to reliably erase everything, that I know of. The best you could do is probably to fill up the whole drive with something else, but even then there may be small remainders of what you used to have on it in sections that have since been marked as damaged/unusable. Data recovery like this would require quite a bit of effort and specialized equipments, but cops shit money (especially in small effort - high fame cases like CP), so they can possibly hire someone to do it (depending on how much they care about your case, and if they are still looking for something).

On newer drives there should be a TRIM command for use by applications, that nulls out the data. You should look into the specs for each individual data erasure tool you consider using, to see if it uses TRIM.

With a conventional (rotating magnetic disk) hard drive, you would use a file shredder of some sort to OVERWRITE the data. That's how you do a proper delete. There are many, many tools for file shredding, including CCleaner, "shred" (the linux command), and others. Ddg it. And low level formats and stuff like that can potentially overwrite (wipe) everything.

But on an SSD, the bytes on the drive are physically worn out over time when you rewrite, and the SSD will try to avoid that. So even if your OS tells the SSD to overwrite the file, it will write the new data to a new area of the drive, evenly distributing the wear. In effect, it will physically change the location the file is stored to on the drive, while leaving the old data intact, even when you try to overwrite! And there is no way to have direct control over where on the drive you choose to overwrite from the OS. SSD drives aren't designed to give you that control.

That's why you need a special command to tell the SSD to blank data (instead of just writing new data somewhere). That's what TRIM is for.
