To show how fire can be unbelievably damaging to buildings, you have a very clear example on that very same accident. A building part of the complex caught fire in the accident, due to the commotion the fire was left uncontrolled and the building collapsed too even tho it wasn't hit by any plane

The towers fell because of the internal core structure which was used to maximize office space, the planes severed the core and then burned to weaken the beams. Thus, the beams would not be able to support the weight above it and the domino effect started downwards. This would not happen to the empire State building or any other skyscraper because they did not use the inner steel core design.
