Slavery was definitely a major issue, but I think we've swung too far from 30 years ago, when it was just one of the causes, to today when the orthodoxy mandates we all say it was slavery and only slavery. It was one of the tipping issues, and a rallying point, but it was the 1% (or 6%) that drove it.

Slavery was THE issue. Every single secessionist document from the time puts slavery as the reason for their secession. The whole freedom and states rights argument came around when the Klan had it's resurgence to glorify the south and give it some kind of moral high ground over the big bad Union.

One big one is just purely cultural. The North was a mult-faceted economy, with heavy industry starting to develop. The South was heavily rural, heavily dependent on one crop (thanks to Eli Whitney's cotton gin) and jealous of the North. They also considered the Northerners to be corrupt, effette, less civilized, and so on. So there was a natural divide. So when the more heavily populated North started to push for nationalization and less local independence (i.e. states rights), it was probably seen as direct threat to their way of life. Slavery was definitely an issue as well, since it was so embedded in the way Southerners thought.
