It's a lot of rainbows but every once in a while you get browns and lake trout.

pb 13.5lb common carp, hopefully going again on tuesday with a rod and float, probably some maggots

thats a fuckin awesome picture. its so beautiful out there. when was your last fish? are you keeping them?
>>
Don't know personal best.
Mostly fish lake st Clair near Detroit Michigan and through out Michigan.
Prefer spinner bait over live.
Buddy has a fishing boat we go muskie fishing he's obsessed with it.
Dad lives on the water and has a boat.

Lake st Clair has every fresh water game fish. It's popular for muskie, small mouth bass and walleye. Sturgeon is making a comeback too. One of my favorite fish that most people hate is a bowfin/dogfish. I think they are neato gang!

dry fly - anything else is trawling by another name. Prefer stalking the small streams of Devon UK after wild brownies - max weight of about 0.5 lbs but lightening fast and fight like crazy for their size
>>
>>737528255
Damn I wish I caught big ones. Salmon season is in but no money for a different pole.

>>737528318
last fish was maybe a month ago. My nephew caught and reeled it in on my pole. It was a decent size. I usually keep if over 8", but I don't keep anything inside the city lakes.

Saltwater fisherman here. Live sardine/squid/anchovies on a hook with a slider weight. Sit and drink beer while the little fucker swims around with a hook in it's nose and wait for the big bite. We catch White Seabass, Yellowtail, Barracuda, Yellowfin, and the rare Sailfish or Dorado.

idk how lake fisherman do it. freshwater is too boring and the fish are too small.
>>
>>737528592

ah
>>
>>737528584
That's awesome. How expensive is it to fly? I'm thinking about getting into it.

im a micro/species fisherman so i dont really agree with that my guy. sometimes it isnt about size, its about amount of species. where do you fish at?
>>

Southern California, Channel Islands, Coronado Islands, Mexico

You can literally spend your life away if you become a gear queer. The thing to remember if if you have a poor-to-average casting action (like I have) then there is not a rod made that will fix it.

You'll get a decent rod for about £200; £50 will buy an OK reel (it's mainly only a place to store the line, you cast with it off and the fish won't run line off the reel unless you hook a monster or something like a sea-trout or salmon by accident. You'll need a good line or two for about £30 each (cheap floating lines develop a memory, don't lie straight, and start sinking when they shouldn't.

Flies are about 50p each (unless you learn to tie you own and you'll need a few to start; you'll also need a leader or three at about £5 each and some spools of tippet of various sizes. The a vest, some forceps to get the hooks out, snips to cut the tippet and some fly dressing (floatant and sinkant). That's a basic rig.

You'll probably end up changing rods several times until you find an action you like; rods vary in stiffness from full slow-action action (noodle mode) to fast tip action (stiff as a bloody poker and will wreck wrists) and more expensive rods do tend to have a smoother action and are lighter.

Does that help? Oh, and take casting lessons - if you teach yourself you'll probably end up with a crap action and use too much power. I tend to do that, and I know 12-yo girls who are the daughters of professional flyfishers that can out-cast me for both accuracy and distance.
>>
You guys have any recommendations for a shore fishing setup? Want to hit the beach and do some shore fishing. All my equipment is for trout.
>>
>>737529914
(cont)
Oh, and I forgot. Waders. You can bank fish from stillwaters, but for the real deal wading is virtually essential. Rubber hip waders are about £30, but I use breathable Gortex chest waders (muh comfort and deeper wading) with stocking feet and separate wading boots - you'll be looking at about £300 for a set of both. Oh, and polarised sunglasses. Never ever ever cast a fly without eye protection - that little hooked bastard is zipping by your head at hundreds of miles per hour and the wind can easily blow it off-line. I've caught my top lip and the back of my head.

the best thing to do is just go to a local sporting store like Dicks, Bass Pro, (for fucks sake, not cabela's) and ask the employee hanging around the fishing section what does he think is the best surf fishing set up for a beginner. He will show you the rod and reel (possibly separate), rigs, bait, hooks, terminal shit like that. hope this helps

btw i just realized i worded that like you were a complete retard, i didnt mean to make it sound like i was talking to a 4 year old xD

Appreciate all the information, cheers!
I gotta think about buying bear deterrent because Alaska.
>>
>>737530572
>because Alaska
God's own fishing country. There you can get steeleye or brook that will rip all the line off your reel to the backing and put a U-bend in your rod. A bit different to the little UK brownies.

I started because I was on holiday in New England, driving along-side rivers (as many of the roads are) anbd I kept seeing these guys standing in the water, casting, and I thought "That looks fun". There started an obsession that nearly exceeds my delight in smashing clay pigeons and has given me many hours and days of gentle pleasure (as well as a lighter wallet). there is a Chinese proverb that says a day spent fishing does not count towards you allotted life span.

Best I've done is a king salmon from lake Michigan with my grandpa once. I don't remember the measurements, mostly because it's not how I normally fish, and it was simply my turn to reel in.

Usually I go up in the mountains and fish little streams and rivers using panther martins, and other spinners. Obviously it's just trout, but I have found a spot near my parents that have some bass in the waters, so I've been using different lures there, and have been having a blast.

lmao nah but black tip is actually an incredible meat when prepared right. very flakey and moist. smoked shark is the best though.
>>
>>737531720
I got so close to having smoked shark once, it was about a year ago, my gf ordered some at a restaurant and she wouldnt let me try some lol
>>
My best was sneaking onto a golf course, casting once with a rapalla countdown and dragging a 4.5lb Bass out... I had enough time to weigh it with my hand scale and throw it back in before a security guard on a golf cart kicked me off their property.

Never had great luck on boats, but would be nice if I knew the right spots.

My main setup is a Daiwa Exceler 2500 on an Ugly Stik GX2 with Spiderwire EZ Braid 10lb... my go-to is a 5in Yamasenko in white, texas rigged on a tru turn offset worm hook.

Spinning all the way, baitcast is more waiting than fishing.
>>
>>737527253
Personal best: 5-pound Largemouth (Not the best, by any means, but still not a bad fish)
Setup: Float tube (Poor bastard here, no boat), an ugly stick, a spinning real, and usually topwater (buzzbaits, poppers, etc.)
Definitely prefer spinning over baitcast.
>>
>>737531855
>baitcast is more waiting than fishing.
what you mean by that?
>>
Sun's come out. Happy fishing everyone!
>>
A guilty pleasure of mine is to find a tiny hook, add a salmon egg or piece of worm, and just pull out tiny bluegill.

how the fuck do you catch a crab with rod and reel??
>>
>>737532050

I guess it depends on what you use them for, When i think baitcaster, I think throwing some bullshit live bait out propping the pole and having a beer.

I prefer the more involved action of a spinner.

fill the cage with bait and a weight.
cast out as far as you can
place rod in sand spike
drink beer
reel in every 15 minutes

you give a sharp tug like setting a hook and reel at a constant speed not slowing down or the crab can become un-snared. Its really relaxing and easy "fishing" usually setup 5-7 rods and go back and forth checking them. there are other models of snares this type works best for me in surf and bays.

here is a google picture of what it look like when they get snared.
>>
>>737535252
yup.

>>737535431
any rod that can cast heavy bait. we use surf rods mostly for the casting distance.
