McDonald's officially replacing 3000 workers for machines.

McDonald's officially replacing 3000 workers for machines. This is what happens when you ask for a 15$ minimum.
>>
>>736771319
I for one welcome our new machine overlords.
mcdonalds cashiers are almost always complete idiots.
>>
>>736771319
No, this is what happens when a corporation realizes they can cut costs by eliminating a low skill ceiling job.

TBH, their customer service metrics can only get better from this.
>>
>>736771319
wonder why they don't use the app. I always thought mcdonalds was in the top of their game
>>
>>736771641
This

It was inevitable even if the workers wanted a lower minimum wage

A machine will always cost less in the long run

Thank god. Fast food cashiers are morons who can't get an order right as it is. And so many of them are stupid niggers. Only downside is that I heard these things are super slow.
>>
>>736771319
Typical conservative reaction - blame the victim.
>>
>>736772006
Then may I say RIP small businesses.
>>
>>736772006
Yeah. Especially with energy and software becoming cheaper than wages. Electric bill too high? Install solar panels in the future. They'll get extra PR face for that too.
>>
>>736771319
Well I'm surprised their food isn't made in a factory assembly line.
>>
>>736772367
It will be, soon enough. It'll take time for the machines to take over, but mcdys is on the path.
>>
>>736771641
Minimum wages accelerate the rate at which this happens. If equivalent hourly price of machines is going something like 25, 23, 21 and labor is going 10->15, it's going to happen sooner rather than later.
>>
>>736771319
This shit has been in the works for fucking DECADES.
>>
Soon a you'll just select the food you want on your phone, pay the company with the patent on the food, then it 3D prints and shoots straight into your fat fucking mouth.
>>
>>736771319
most min wage job exist only because there is not a technology to replace them. there are AI systems in the works to replace customer service call centers, self-driving cars to replace taxis/couriers/truck drivers, etc. it not so much min wage is asking for more as it is the growth of technology. primary reason i'm learning to code
>>
>>736772732
>Minimum wages accelerate the rate at which this happens

So?
Let's demand minimum wages of 50$ per hour so that the corporations are forced to replace every job by machines.

Nobody has to work anymore, tax the shit out of the corporations (worldwide - so that there are no tax havens)

>>
>>736771771
Because no one wants a MCDONALD'S app on their phone. It's tacky and gay. If you would have the NEED TO DOWNLOAD IT, then you should reconsider your life choices that led you to frequently make use of a McDonald's app.
>>

>>
>>736772006
There will be a niche for human interaction if computers take over, people will migrate to said jobs nothing will change
>>
I guess the real question we should be asking companies is: What are they going to do when there isnt enough people buying their shit because all low-tier jobs are fucking gone?
>>
>>736771641
True, the upfront overhead cost of equipment lile that is easily absorbed for a massive corporatipn like McD, making the long term savings of lower payroll expense faster to realize.
>>
>>736773776
that's when they push for govt funded universal wages

>>

Well the funny thing is, min wage workers are the type of people that buy fast food.
>>

Let it happen! Let ALL jobs be replaced by robots! They will do the work while we get the rewards! I voted for trump, but I'll admit the future is undoubtedly socialist and that's fine. Just need the republican party there to make sure we don't run too fast into this robot thing and end up fucking shit up. It has to be slow: there is a LOT of change to be made until we have a future where none of us have to work, robots doing everything instead. It's really inevitable: with the advancement of robotics and technology, this sort of stuff will get cheaper and cheaper and more appetizing to corporations. And corporations are the biggest influence in what happens to the world, aside from governments.

You're mostly correct, however I feel the need to point out that retrofitting the POS systems in every McDonald's in just the United States wouldn't be counted in millions, you're talking hundreds of millions, potentially billions in initial investment. Which is why they are careful about who gets it when, and testing it before full scale implementation.

Doing it on a world wide scale would most likely get into the tens of billions by the time the project is completed.
>>
>>736775224
If it works for bottom-feeders like you, why shouldn't the rest of us do it too? Oh, that's right, you don't want a fair fight, you want to win automatically and get your trophy just for showing up. The rich don't get rich by hoarding money. They're not a bunch of Scrooge McDucks swimming in literal pools of cash. They get money and then BUY SHIT WITH IT THAT CONTINUES TO MAKE MONEY FOR THEM. Maybe if you experienced the real world through something other than the Internet and MTV, you'd have something resembling an informed opinion, but no, you'd rather drink the Kool-aid and sieg heil to anyone who will promise you something for nothing instead of grow up and earn your place.

As an accountant, I see the spending habbits of dozens of snall businesses, and the millionares I work for are the ones that are slowest to pay their bills. Not because they can't pay, but because generally the wealthy are far stingier than normal society.

America is the wealthiest nation on Earth, but its people are mainly poor, and poor Americans are urged to hate themselves. To quote the American humorist Kin Hubbard, 'It ain’t no disgrace to be poor, but it might as well be.' It is in fact a crime for an American to be poor, even though America is a nation of poor. Every other nation has folk traditions of men who were poor but extremely wise and virtuous, and therefore more estimable than anyone with power and gold. No such tales are told by the American poor. They mock themselves and glorify their betters. The meanest eating or drinking establishment, owned by a man who is himself poor, is very likely to have a sign on its wall asking this cruel question: 'if you’re so smart, why ain’t you rich?' There will also be an American flag no larger than a child’s hand – glued to a lollipop stick and flying from the cash register.

Right, pretend to have insider information so you can claim to be right in spite of your assertion being absurd. Money sitting around does nothing. You're confusing the corporate wealthy with the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. Money is useless unless it's being utilized to either procure assets. Interest-bearing accounts only exist as a means to encourage the middle class to dump money into banks where they get pennies a year if anything, while the real wealthy are moving their money on a daily basis. A REAL accountant would know this. Stop trying to win by deceit.

My R&D budget was $1,000.
I bought a cheap as fuck 3d printer, a Raspberry pi 3, a Pi Zero W, and the required input-output components. Spent 4 months designing, coding and building, then started marketing among people in the region who might be interested and selling them discounted early prototypes for testing and feedback. 5 months later, paid a buddy to design me a quick website and started ad work on social media and among other local businesses; even did a little radio spot.

Sorry I'm a prick and won't go into detail about what the thing is. The moral of the story is that I knew jack shit about coding or robotics until I dived in, and found out that it's actually not that fucking complicated to automate things.

They tried in Canada in the 70's
A new government got in and cut its funding before all the data points could be scrutinised.

Turns out there wasn't a single area of society that had a negative outcome.
Fewer hospital visits, healthier population, increased productivity, more educated, less crime, less poverty.
The universal income program actually SAVED them money...of course, we're only learning this now that the data has been analysed.

There are vested interests who do not want a fairer, more equal society - because it would mean less power for them.
But keep cheerleading for the status quo - I'm sure your grandchildren will thank you from their hovels for your lack of vision and cowardice

I'm going to laugh my ass off when people start fucking up their own order (and will still demand free food and/or a refund). New people do suck at cashier, I'll admit that; the turnover rate doesn't really help that, either. But I've been through these jobs, and I can tell you with actual experience outside of people's anecdotal stories that the public do the most retarded shit trying to order food. This is because what most people understand about the menu is from pretty pictured and words they see on the tv box. You think that's going to stop now that the public, who have barely half an idea how to get something other than their usuals, now makes the order themselves? If the cashier isn't retarded, at least they can piece together the context for whatever pig latin people try to order with.

Did taco bell for a while, and you wouldn't believe the sheer amount of people asking for the $5 box
Cool, which one? There's like 3.

Another thing the public doesn't get because they're not dealing with the menu all the time, is grouping group orders into meals (which saves money). Though, admittedly, that still requires someone who has half a clue what they're doing to catch it when people order all "loose" like this.

or

> am i really so petty that i judge someone's entire character based on a utensil

so i kinda think, while yes, it's a simple job, we've also been somewhat brainwashed to expect little to no inconveniences in American culture because of instant gratification. a lot of businesses' entire marketing schemes are promises of convenience and ease... think department stores in the 50s.

convenience being marketable slowly became a requirement for all other businesses. because humans eat that shit up. literally.

Alright. So, as a lower wage worker that lives in a state thjat recently raised the minimum wage [and its slated to go up 50% over the original of $8.35 over the next 3 years] i was rather livid that all these uneducated fucks voted for something that, in the long run, will make EVERYTHING more expensive.
The idea that distributing the wealth to others is a good idea is bullshiit.
I've spent a good portion of my life working out of kitchens, everything from some shitty 2-star cajun crawdadfest to brewpubs, to fast food, and even one of those really hoity toity 5-star resort restaurants that charge 70 bucks a plate and give you half the portions. Earilier this thread someone was saying to give an example of how this affects people negatively. Let me shed a little light on this for you.
Increasing minimum wage doesnt help the economy, i learned this in fucking 6th grade... More money means our currency is worth less, therefore the cost of importing goods goes up. as a result of that the cost of manufacturing goes up. in order to keep the same profit margin up, the cost of all goods goes up too. This covers everything from the food you get in your grocery stores, to whatever shitey video games you play. heres another effect it has. You work in a place for 10 years, you're making 6.25 to start, and it stays that way slowly going up my 10-15% per year. eventually you're making 10 bucks an hour and running the line. this new increase comes into effect, and suddenly the dishwasher who literally stands there as you're trying to run a fucking restaurant is making the same amount as you. he's been there 2 months. How in the fuck does it make sense that someone who clawed their way up to head chef, went to fucknig culinary school, is making the same amount of money as the shitey dishwasher who cant even clean a pan properly and uses steel wool on the nonsticks, makes only 50 cents less than you per hour?

Customer comes in, you admit to half-paying attention when they make there order so you fuck up. You fix the mistake, fine, but then they ask you for the manager and what do you do? You chuckle at the customer, say some fucking unnecessary autistic remark "I can do math better than them, but I'll get them anyway" and then wonder why they're annoyed with you? >

>Some little fuck cashier who just fucked things up for me, just chuckled at me when I asked them to get the manager and basically said "You're stupid because I do it better than them"

In all honesty kid, you're lucky you didn't get fired and if you think I'm exaggerating, try working for a bigger company, fucking up a clients order, then basically laughing at them when they ask for your manager. See how the blows over, especially when you're a replaceable asset.

Like I said, the fact that you think you're in the right here is just fucking laughable. Maximum Kek.
>>
Oh, btw, little tip for ordering at taco bell. If you want stuff added for free, ask for "light"or "easy X on it. Doesnt matter what it is, meat, pico, sour, whatever. If it's a quantifiable thing (i.e. not like adding a shell, but sauce or tomatoes), it will ring up with no extra charge. This is because the "easy" function was made assuming the item already has the item. I don't know if it will work everywhere, idk if they'll let you, or that a newbie won't ask a manager of you're allowed or not. But give it a shot. Most likely, they won't give a shit and just send it through. It's an entirely valid order to make.

You can't read, can you? Why are you just skimming and reacting?

What's funny is that because I was comfortable with the public, I was one of the best people they had for dealing with the front counter. After I left, someone told me most of the regulars were asking me where I was l. Most people that went there knew I knew what I was doing. The managers knew this.

Tell me something, what's the difference between asking for a manager assuming the change would be wrong, or asking for a manager IF the change was wrong?
Logically, they take the same amount of time, but by assuming, they ended up not only selfishly holding up the line, but holding back their own order from being sent through to the kitchen.
That's what's funny about it. But again, for the third time, I get where they thought it would have been better their way.

Keep in mind that it doesn't matter what tender amount I put in at all. I could put a billion dollars, and as long as I give correct change, the customer is good, and the drawer count is good.

Hello all I am from NYC. Burger King has had these for over a year and you can watch people walk up to the order kiosk then nope right over to human cashiers all day. While I don't think they can replace them outright, it's def possible for them to create a 50/50 ratio. I've seen them work pretty well in most places, especially if counter workspace is a concern (For orders/pickups)

That's what happens when big corperations run a country. No justice, no social equality, no human rights, just profits.
I'm just wating for the inevitable culling of the population by homeland security stormtroopers.

I so pity you yanks.

Yeah, I've seen a lot of places stray from this though because people can just order shit and not even show up... If it's in store it's less likely to be bullshit, although still possible

They're the paying customer little boy, they can waste anyone's time if they damn well please. If you hit the right button in the first place, which you admitted you weren't paying attention to, none of this would've happened.

There's a reason there's lines at banks too, so mistakes don't get made.

Like them asking for more money didn't change the fact that a machine costs less to run than paying minimum wage. It was going to happen and I really hope it happens to you next

The system that we had at taco bell was kind of annoying. The online orders didn't even show up until someone pressed "special orders" or something on a terminal, so the person still had to show up and say they have an online order. Saved time for them ordering, but it was more just clumsy than anything.

>>736785598
> ad hominem & ad nauseoum
I half pay attention to everything. And I also "admitted" to catching the mistake before I ever even made the change. Sorry you think basic arithmetic is hard to do. Seems you'd rather waste the time of everyone around you just for the chance to feel superior and smig. And you go and project that "entitlement" on me?

Everyone after her was pretty nice, though. I actually didn't mind dealing with the public at all for some reason, even her. I still leave at the end of the day and get a paycheck. It was just a funny story. Why are you so keen on trying to fumble some point out?

Let me retell this story as the guy behind said prissy fuck.
>Go to taco bell
>Busy as fuck in there
>LAdy in front of me orders a couple things that come out to around 15 bucks
>Hands the casheir a fifty
>Machine says 5 bucks in change
>Whoops, employee messed up and immediately tries to fix the issue
>Customer sees an opportunity to try and get free food, dispite his polite apology and accurate math [which she apparently cant do... its elementary school arithmatic...]
>Lady doesnt believe the casheir is smart enough to do a simple task a 7 year old can.
>Demands to see manager
>Employee chuckles a bit, understandably
>Been next in this queue for a few minutes, only angry at dumbass in front of me
>Manager comes and pulls out a calculator to prove he's done the math right, and her order gets sent through
>finally order
>takes one minute
>Casheir is stoned but not so stupid he's incapable of doing shit.
>smile and walk away with my tacos, as long as my orders not fucked up and i get the right change, i don't give a fuck, these guys are making my food for me so i don't have to, despite the fact its mediocre assembly line tacos.

I honest lysee no way this anon was acting entitled, get off your fucking high horse.

I dunno how to feel about it. The machines work great for what they're supposed to do.

As for as $15/hr argument... I make substantially more than that and I can't help feel like simply raising minimum wage erodes my income. I'm not going to get a raise to match their increase and the associated rise in cost.

I guess i'm just a greedy prick? 1st world problems.

You are assuming that their employees also make up a sizeable portion of their consumer base which is not necessarily true. These companies employ large teams of mathematicians whose sole job it is to work out how these decisions will impact the bottom line so I guarantee this is something they have thought through.

Automation is replacing so many jobs, that a point is going to come where we ask ourselves that if almost no jobs are attainable for the average person, why should someone need a job in order to live?

The arguments over that question are not going to be pretty, I think.
