Honestly, it would be difficult to completely eradicate the human race.

I believe it would take a nuclear or volcanic event that leads to a perpetual cloud or dust cover creating an endless winter. And even then, people with bunkers could last a few years after the initial event. The devastation would have to last a decade or so to completely get rid of all humans.

But the most sure-fire way would be with a collision with a substantial asteroid. Or a genetically engineered super-bug. Something like aids, but an airborne species.

I think that due to a very random and very lucky set of circumstances life started on earth, and any day that we're alive is just luck. Sooner or later we go extinct as we're not even a speck of dust in the universe and lack every form of technology and understanding to be able to survive in it.
The universe is just allowing us to live and can end us whenever and there is nothing we can do about it.

Amazingly enough we're making it hard enough on our own to even stay alive without the universe doing anything, and that also shows we are completely uncapable of surviving long term and unable to colonize other planets.

My bet is that we either do it ourselves or it's through some kind of virus or disease, probably our own fault aswell. Alternatively an asteroid of sorts, although we already have worked out how to deal with them, it's questionable if we are actually able to pull it off.

It seems extremely ambitious and unrealistic to me to expect that we're still here when the sun vaporizes the earth, which is billions of years away, and as the statement goes: if the age of the Earth were compressed into a 24-hour day, humans would occupy only the last second.

It's like you barely managed to make a single step into a marathon, nearly broke your ankles, sweating, tired, hungry, thirsty but are confident that you'll make it to the end.
