I've done nothing productive today, and it's been wonderful. But, I have a problem. When I stop everything and relax (something I can almost always do) I have a hard time starting to be productive again. I tend to get depressed - not that there aren't plenty of other things contributing to that - but that usually lasts for 2-3 months and I end up doing the bare minimum to scrape by in life. I know I definitely wrestle with motivation fatigue, for lack of a better phrase. There's so much bullshit that theoretically deserves or undivided attention, it's hard to stay jazzed about any one thing for an extended period.

By the way, if you wait until you're totally sorted to do the shit you really care about, you'll never get to it. Life is a series of stumbles and awkward moments, punctuated with the occasional spark of amazing and a lot of pulling yourself back to your feet. Get to where you're kind of okay, and then go for it. All the minor shit will fall by the wayside, typically, as long as you've got your basic needs taken care of.

Which is why any period of rest should be kept short and sweet, as the longer one goes without being productive, the more difficult it will inevitably be to start again.

I don't don't anyone who lives near me. I contact my parents once every few weeks. I have a few friends online I play games with.

I'm also not sure talking about my problems would be terribly helpful. I had this issue long before I was diagnosed, but not before it starting leaving lesions in my brain. I assume it's a mild case of bipolar, which is 60% more common in people with MS.

The thing is, I've never given up hope entirely, and I've never considered suicide. I get lethargic and fail to accomplish things, then sort of make up for it a few months later with a manic phase that hopefully usually stays under control.

My strategy for resuming my duties after a long time away includes drawing up a new schedule a week or two in advance. I write down what I must do and assign firm dates and times to each and every task. I make sure to have it either in my phone or displayed somewhere prominent on my desktop.

Now, when the time comes to execute a task, if I find myself lacking motivation to get started, I--and this next part is important! I spring up explosively from my chair, close everything non-essential to my duties, and get down to the onset of the task. Curse once or twice for good measure. Maybe throw some items.

The violence of the action shakes you up and hides the pain of starting the task (that you've potentially built up via procrastinating)

Ah, MS... I've known a few with the same... it can really take it's toll on one's mental health as well. I bring up having people to talk to b/c it helps to know others care and support you, builds the confidence to do what you want. Is the MS being handled appropriately? what about the bipolar? Are you receiving adequate medication? What about counseling?

Disclaimer: I'm a therapist, not a Dr., but working in a hospital I'm no stranger to physical medical issues or medication.

I'm just now stable on Copaxone. My last MS relapse was a few months ago. I've been dealing with it for years without knowing what it was, and now that it's being treated it seems to be slowing down. I haven't talked to any professionals about the bipolar, and I use that term lightly as a result. If my years of introspection are at all accurate, it's more along the lines of cyclothymia but no one knows what that is. Still, I've done a decent job managing it and I have friends I can vent to about it when things get too far. It's just that now that I'm busier than ever, I usually can't afford to sit browse /b/ for half the day and the issue is starting to seem more profound.
