"Counter culture," if the early days of the internet can really be called that, pretty much always ends in the culture becoming mainstream and watered down, and loses what integrity it may have originally had. this is all sort of off-topic i guess, but last week this really rang true for me. i work for a shipping company and i make about $300 a week. this guy around my age came in driving a nice mercedes and wanted to ship a cheap looking label maker, a few rolls of tape, and a couple plastic folders. total value of the items was like $50. he sent them to china and the cost of shipping was $300. could easily have bought those items in china for like $30. but after he left i felt really depressed because this guy came in and spent my entire week's wage on 1 thing just like it was nothing, he didn't hesitate about price at all. meanwhile i have to plug in another 30 hours this week just to make what he spent and still be struggling to pay rent.
