They did not hack election booths, no. I think what's believed to have happened is that Russia hacked social media or other online hubs of activity (like 4chan) to spread misinformation. This misinformation campaign involved targetting individuals in swing states, and filtering the videos or information these people saw on facebook. They would filter out all the bad stuff about trump, and promote slanderous videos about hillary. For more about this tactic learn about slide threads on pol.

Another thing that the Russians are accused of doing is hacking wikileaks and rereleasing info about the email scandal at a critical time before the election. Wikileaks info is classified information that has been leaked, but because it could potentially risk national security (news stations realize this) it cannot all be brought to the publics attention. So wikileaks is in charge of formulating the "schedule" for when the info is leaked. Russia fucked around with this schedule I guess.
