1. AMA
2. All I have to do to die is unplug the batteries in my machine, drop it in water, or disconnect my tubes from the machine to the artificial heart. Will it be painless?

I've had to change my machine over to the back up numerous times. The process is unplugging 4 colored tubes and reattaching them to the correlating colors. My heart has stopped numerous times. I feel my blood and body get cold and everything starts to fade to black. Adrenaline saved my life and I plugged everything back in. When the machine malfunctions it sounds like a fucking fire alarm.

Not sure i understood that sentence, you mean they let you choose between having an artificial heart and living, or not getting one and probably dying i suppose (if you need an artificial heart you must have been in a pretty bad shape)

Also how do you deal with the machine, you have to carry that bag around all the time? Like on your back?

It's a bridge to heart transplant. The longest anyone has had one is 4 1/2 years. I'm coming up on a year in July.
-I'm on a shit ton of medicine. My heart rate is set to 125 because the machine isn't as powerful as a real heart so it needs to work faster to pump the blood through my body. I'm super fatigued all the time but I'm healthier than when my heart started failing.

>>735992663
They told me I would die within the next week if nothing was done. My organs were failing because my heart was only working 25%. there was a clot in my left ventricle that had blocked a major part of it. I carry the bag around all the time, it's twenty pounds. I also carry a backup machine and 8 batteries. The tubes that come out of my chest are extremely painful and sensitive so my movement is limited. I stopped taking my pain meds because my dad is a heroin addict and he was taking them. I don't want to go down that path.

>Mind if I ask what your problem is?
rare genetic mutation. Chronic pancreatitis ---> high chance of pancreatic cancer.

A guy from the states whom I was in touch with online was diagnosed with it and died in under a years time at the age of 28.

Close to my current age. The problem is that I can't go full chill mode in case I survive into my 40's and beyond and have achieved nothing in life.

On the other hand I'm torn between working more and studying less to have an easier life now.

Led to a lot of procrastination in my life in terms of achievements. Either live in the moment or study hard and cash out a better life in a future I may or may not have.

My issue pales in comparison to you. I feel both of us were dealt a shitty hand.
>>
>>735992432
so is it a thing that looks like a heart or does it work based on a turbine-system with a little pump?

in other words: do you have a heartbeat or are you a vampire?

good luck bro

also, if you enjoy playing games, play Eve Online. It's free now and it's a shit game but it has one of the best communities out there. Most MMO's people are microphone-shy and pretend they have no microphone because they don't want you to know they're 12. In eve online everybody is 25+ with kids I'm not even joking. There are some caring and kind people out there hiding between between the campers and 0-morals scammers. You just have to join the right player corporation and get on teamspeak and say hi.

The game is garbage if you don't join a player corp tho. I reccomend joining Brave Newbies Inc. within the first 30 minutes of playing. But as a member back when I used to play, I'm pretty biased.

>>
>>735991709
>it would probably feel like having a heart attack

No, it wouldn't. Heart attack hurts because a part of your heart, the muscle, isn't getting the oxygen it needs. He has no heart.

All he would most likely feel are the effects of a major blood loss - except in his case it's not a blood loss it's lack of blood circulation.

That would be dizziness, shortness of breath and rapid breathing, more dizziness and loss of consciousness.

My dad had a heart condition that couldn't be healed at his time. He was supposed to die in his early teenage years.

He got, when he was almost dead, a new kind of surgery at 12 years old. He was the first person ever to survive to this. He needed a second surgery in his twenties, and had a plenty life and survived until 60+ years old.

He had two children (my sister and me) and three grandchildren. We're all here because of him, and we loved him the most. He was the first father ever.

This year has been the 10th anniversary of his passing. It still hurts, of course, but I feel lucky and I'm very happy.

That could be your story, too. Healthcare evolves pretty fast. You can't know.

tl;dr: there's hope. KEEP FIGHTING. Good luck.
>>
>>735995012
I had no problems whatsoever. I was fit I played a lot of sports in high school and was always skating. But the symptoms started with major fatigue, which I thought was just my depression and weed usage, but then my organs started failing and I couldn't breath and I gained 30 pounds. You can't really tell if something is wrong unless you get an EKG and even then you still need a heart cath to find anything concerning. As long as you aren't bloating up and feeling like you're about to suffocate you are ok.

>>735994547
>If this has taught me anything it's to live in the moment life's too short.

I really wish it was that simple. What am I meant to do give up on my university education just so I can live in the moment. It has the been the ultimate dilemma I've been dealing with.

I'm planning to just go hard for my long term goals. Keep an eye on things. At the first signs of cancer start cashing out whatever I have and go traveling around the world. Fuck spending my last year/s wasting away due to chemotherapy in a hospital.

I didn't even know you could get complete artificial hearts. Shit's got me interested.

Are there any upsides to having a artificial heart? or only negatives? list some of the best and worst parts of having it.

is it weird seeing your own organ sliced open like that, knowing it's yours and that if it wasnt replaced you would be dead?

are the tubes visible under clothes? say i walked past you on the street wold i notice?

and, is there any foods you're not allowed to eat? like high cholesterol ?

As we speak I'm going to see my GF's father at Boston General. He had an L-Vat (not sure if that's what it's called)

When the heart stops beating does the diaphragm keep a bit of circulation?
>>

If I walk into a room everyone stares at me and goes quiet it's pretty loud. Advice from a medfag : pain medicine doesn't tend to become addictive when you use it to alleviate pain. In hospitals, we routinely use "morphine pumps" where patients decide when they need a dose.

Opiates almost only get addictive when they're used recreationally. Other pain medication is not addictive at all.

I understand how your father's addiction can make you reticent, but nothing forces you to stay in pain when there is medication available.

No, the diaphragm makes you breath, it generates some kind of negative pressure in inspiration which helps the blood entering the heart, but cannot possibly keep your blood circulation

When blood stops pumping, you get dizzy and lose consciousness in maybe ten seconds. Your brain needs a constant stream of oxygen to maintain consciousness. You don't get cold, and there are no nerves on the inside of blood vessels.
If you've ever lain in hot weather and got up quickly and got dizzy, or if you've ever passed out from experiencing something disturbing, that's exactly how it feels. Then you die.

The one I was involved in developing is supposed to cost up to 300,000 USD though, not sure if that even includes the required operations, although cost of that will go down eventually of course, it is not the materials that are that expensive but getting some of the money put into developing it back. So far the German government has put over 70 Mio USD into that project.

I am 8 years in, but I had to install a pacemaker last year to fix my sick sinus. But other than that, so far so good.

My endurance is ok, sub par but considering having a fucking fake heart and a machine keeping me alive it's all good. I can walk around the mall and drive around no problems. After the surgery your bro might be extremely tired and bed ridden for a few weeks. That's ok. Baby steps. First week I walked maybe 10 feet? Two weeks 100 feet and then eventually I was doing laps around the hospital. Well his heart rate will be set to a number between 120-150 based on what the doctors think is ok. It feels a little different, it beats differently and sometimes I can feel it pumping against my chest in certain positions, but it's easy to get used to. Your brother will do well on either of the machines, preferably the LVAD, if he has to get the syncardia it's harder but he will spend less time on the transplant list. Wishing you and the brother best of luck.

Are you ever worried that you will keep cutting off parts and replacing them?

It will not be painless.

Also, where do you get your money? A shit ton must be used for all your maintenance.

it's basically how they euthanize animals. high potassium doses literally make your heart just stop. your blood stops running, and your brain suffocates. it's painless, it's just like you're passing out, that's it.

however, as far as i know, once this happens you're pretty damn anxious for the last seconds, even though it's not hurting.

... which is why they now drug said animals before, too.

It's worse than that, it's disrespectful. You got given a second shot by a person who was robbed of their first and you don't even have the good grace to show some fucking appreciation.

Oh my god hearing that you blaze is a the best news. I was afraid I was going to be a sober boi forever. And knowing that diet isn't too fucked up and you're pretty much normal is really comforting. Congrats on 8 years man that's inspiring!
