Do not talk to them. Talking to them humanizes you, it lets them understand you, your emotional state. You bring them meals. You make statements. Leaving a bowl of water and a rag and say "Clean yourself before I get back."

When your rules are broken, you punish them by withholding. They don't eat? Don't bring them their next meal. Don't go to check in on them. Leave them for hours on end alone. Then begin to reward compliance. If they follow your command quickly and promptly, give them a blanket or a pillow or a book. The important thing is to give them little pieces of "property". Tokens which mean something to them and that later you can take away as punishment, giving your more to punish them with.
