i like the tipping system (and dont forget, if they come up short of minimum wage the employer has to make up the difference anyway), for the reason that it rewards good service.
last time i was out, the super cute girl serving me was really friendly, brought me free samples of stuff to try, chatted with me for a while, and payed attention to if i needed anything. the rest of the servers at this place (where i eat all the time) never do any of that, so giving her a substantially higher tip only encourages better service in the future from her and anyone else who notices why she gets more tips.

That being said, the restaurant should have this figured into their pricing, sure the profits aren't as big, but they won't go under. So they raise prices a little to make sure they stay in business. I feel better paying and extra 75 cents per plate, knowing the waiter will atleast make minimum wage, than this asshole giving me a dirty look cause I didn't leave an extra $25 on the table, when the greeter found my table, made my drink, and suggested the appetizers to my group. The greeter makes minimum wage and does half the job, that waiter is not entitled to more money, out of my wallet no less, just cause he picked up hot plates.
