Because it was part of a legitimate worldwide battle against communism. Vietnam had it's own battle over the subject and we became the patrons of our own side. A proxy war to be sure but nothing like the aggressive territorial expansions and all-or-nothing ideologies of WW2.

Also many Americans regret or deride Vietnam, the phrase "Vietnam Vet" is synonymous with drug addiction, alcoholism and homelessness punctuated by the idea those things are a result of trauma literally forced upon them by the government. There's a generally negative opinion of it more so than any other war. I am speaking as a Californian here, though.

Because Americans are completely cut off from it by an ocean,plus at least back then people did care and there was a movement, media wasn't completely bought and owned by 6 corporations. Compare the public outcry over Vietnam towards its end to how the public reacted to contemporary recent wars like the one in Iraq and Afghanistan and Libya, not to mention Pakistan drone strikes.

Conclusion: Americans are cut off from the world around them and therefore they lack empathy when some nameless young girl in Syria is brutally killed by targeted air strike. The reality however is that this is a heinous war crime that is no better than what Germany did in WW2. And btw the argument of intentions is bullshit. Evil is evil regardless.
