Gay people are largely marginalized in many communities. Gay pride events aren't necessarily them saying they are proud that they were born gay, they are saying they are proud that they have overcome the discrimination that comes with them being gay, and pride events are a celebration of their triumph over hard times. The same thing goes for black pride events or any 'pride' events that are focused on a marginalized community.
