Not very intellectual but I had a realisation the other day when I woke up in the middle of a dream about how our brain works. It's all connections between pieces of information, and when you're dreaming those connections are random, that's why you confuse people and things, but when you're awake you have a strong tendency to make certain connections, which reflect in your habits and ways of thinking. I found that when I'm anxious I get stuck in a small loop of thoughts and if I decide to consciously mix up things the anxiety goes away, for example pretending that the person you're talking to is someone else or talk about something completely unrelated to the subject you were discussing.
