Schizophrenic, here, this is absolutely true and the reason I won't go back to smoking weed. For fifteen years I kept a one-hitter full of really good blueberry nugs for when someone ran my blood pressure up and made me spaz out. While it did prevent many a psychotic episode and there are therefore several people who are still alive (and I've got a clean arrest record) because of it, it gradually made the situation worse. Eventually even on days where nothing was going wrong and I wasn't under any stress I'd still start to spaz out just because it had been more than three hours since I hit the bowl. Even five years after quitting I'm considerably less stable than before I started smoking weed.

I never cared about the other effects. I had (and still have) brain cells to spare, the neurochemical changes keeping me from dreaming was actually a good thing in my case, and I had already graduated high school before I started smoking. But being crazy isn't nearly as much fun as hollywood would have you believe.

I started smoking cigarettes because they kept me calmer. I didn't actually seek out weed, I was in auto tech classes after high school and a classmate passed me a j during our smoke break. It made me happy, and some time later I realized that it would calm me from a psychotic episode almost instantly.

I can see the IQ lowering thing, when I first started smoking I did it with heavy users daily for a few weeks. I felt literally retarded so I quit for a while. Now I don't do it nearly as much, and because I have such a low tolerance I can smoke just a little and not deal with that pesky brain damage problem.
I also know a guy who had a psychotic break because he smoked heavily multiple times daily for years and probably had issues to begin with. He still isn't back to 100% yet and it's been months.

But the reality is weed does certain things to your conscious state, and those things manifest themselves as some of these negative side effects within SPECIFIC people/minds/lifes. If you are so and so kind of person than weed is correlating with such and such behavior. Skeptical of authority? It'll give you some schizophrenia. That sort of thing. It's a general thing going on inside your mind, psychological. It's not "just" some chemical toxin creating invariable biological changes in organs. If you're going to take a scientific stance on a thing you have to do so from a proper perspective, using the right fields of study as your frame.
