Dude, rousey shredded people because she used Judo specifically and in MMA yeah, it can be different but if you're talking just pure self defense you can absolutely wreck someone if you learn that and pair it with basic striking (keeping distance/footwork balance) and some basic BJJ.

Basically you use their weight to your advantage so if they're bigger or taller and coming at you, you can toss em like nothing but def wanna learn some ground game. BJJ pairs beastly with it and you typically learn both at gyms, a little of the other depending what you're learning.

She's a good example of how judo can be dominant but you need to learn something to pair with it. I always tell people to learn BJJ if self-defense since shit usually ends up on the ground unless you're both trained and have amazing balance or footwork.

A great combo is BJJ, Judo, and either boxing if shorter or Muay Thai if taller. They're all great but imo those combos are the deadliest. It's obviously easier said than done but learning some simple shit from each, tips and tricks can really round you out. Those 'MMA' gyms can be good if you go for a little while and take a mix bag of basics from each, and then branch out and pick the martial art you like most
