I had no problems with her being a woman. as for being a captain, let me put it this way, of all the starfleet captains from the show, she made the most sense being moved into a admiral. She was more of a administrator, who, yes, did she the big picture of things but screwed her crew over and over and over again. I mean they were never going to be able to properly replace Daniel/O'Neill/Carter/Teal'c but they did about as good a job as they could have been expected to do. The Original Series really wasn't that good. It did have some good characters and some good episodes, lots of redeeming qualities, but overall it was mediocre at best. And it had some REALLY shitty episodes, too.

But TNG, VOY, and DS9 were all top notch, especially TNG. They still had some bad episodes (like every show), but they were generally very high quality.

The movies were obviously hit-and-miss, but it's hard to dislike the first couple at least, and I think 4 was also really fun (if a bit campy), while 6 was fair enough. I can't recommend the rest unfortunately.
