I had them once... and that shit is fucked up. I noticed small blood spots on my pillow, and I thought it was a zit on my neck or face that left the mark. Then I once lifted my pillow, and they were right there, under my fucking pillow! Full of blood, so they were not aware. Then I checked around my bed linens, where they usually hide, and I found more. Fuck.

Then I had to empty the ENTIRE house. Yes. The ENTIRE fucking house... put clothes in plastic bags, and wash them in really hot water... remove everything else too, so the exterminators could do their job. Then they had to come a few times, because they put different kinds of products.

This shit sucked so much. I didn't even know bedbugs existed before this happened to me. I don't even wish it on my worst enemies.

If I could give a single tip to any person here, it would be to put your backpack in a big plastic bag when you go in hotels, or hostels. That could save you so much time and energy. The extermination is such a big pain in the ass.

If you haven't hit full scale infestation yet, you need to act NOW if you want to avoid a very costly professional extermination. Buy a sack of food grade diatomaceous earth and pour a solid ring of it all the way around your bed. Then you need to thoroughly iron all your bedding to kill any bugs or eggs that are already in the bed. Over the next few weeks any bugs in the room will need to climb through the ring of diatomaceous earth to get to you in your sleep and will slowly "bleed out" as a result. If you let the infestation get bad, this method won't work any more because it takes a few weeks to kill them all and you're still getting bitten in the meantime.

The only concerns I have with this study is a lack of transparency on their application methods used and the fact it sounds like many of the test subjects had to drop out of the study in favor of professional extermination presumably because their infestations were already severe. Notice they mention observing bedbugs traversing a 1" wide strip of DE "dusted" coffee filter with poor results. Man I feel bad for you. Here's what I HAD TO DO to get rid of those fuckers when I was broke:

Things I needed:
> washing machine and boiling water
> dryer
> big bags
> bleach and atomizer

Step 1: washed all of my clothes with boiling water, including sheets, curtains, etc and bagged it all to seal it
Step 2: looked for holes in the walls and ceiling, carefully without missing a single spot, this takes time, if I saw anything suspicious I would spray bleach inside the hole, sometimes the bleach would splurt out with bedbug carcasses or shit
Step 3: flipped the mattress and looked everywhere, flipped it again and looked everywhere, again, if anything suspicious or if I saw a bedbug, I would spray bleach on it (bleach stops them and makes them lift their tail for the pain they feel, sometimes they de with the bleach, sometimes it just stops them, either way, I would smash them to make sure
Step 4: flipped the base of the bed, looked carefully everywhere, I'm talking 1 hour here and there's no way out, I had to do this, then I would do the same with the bleach
Step 5: wash the mattress, this had to be done in the morning to allow for the air and sun to dry it while I was out
Step 6: this is the most important thing, repeat this a fuckton of times, maybe for three weeks, until you don't see them again, they gradually stop appearing

I haven't seen one in months.

No. I used to work maintenance for a hotel. When we had a bedbug issue, we called in pros. They brought in like four heaters per room, and we had to give them 240 Volt hookups to use because they each drew too much power. They would heat the entire room up to about 120-130, hot enough that we had to shut off the fire sprinklers to the entire floor because there was a chance they would go off. Then they would hold the room at that temperature for at least 24 hours, wait a day, then inspect.

We also had to pull all the outlet covers and switch covers off, because they would get in there and move to other rooms, so we had to make sure they got burned out there too. We then trashed all the linen from the affected room and had it deep cleaned. It was a huge, involved process that took the better part of a week each time, and cost us a ton of money.

Also, when we had a bedbug room, we locked out the room to either side, and one room above and below, and had each of those rooms chemically treated while the first room was being heated.

This is a good case of the saying that goes along the lines of "prevention is better than having to deal with consequences". Trust me. It's way way easier to avoid getting an infestation than to deal with it.

You're going to have to get an exterminator which is a difficult process.

Basically you 100% have them even if you don't see them. If you get bit even once tonight make sure you call an exterminator asap because it will only get worse.

Get a hand held steam cleaner and diatomaceous earth. Blast your entire bed with the steam cleaner. Sprinkle the D.E. everywhere underneath your bed and in every corner of your frame. Now just every night before you go to bed just take a flashlight and go over every inch of your mattress. Every week or so run your bedding through a washer/dryer. If you have a camera with night vision and a battery that could last the whole night, set it up to record yourself at night.

But you need to understand that they don't always come out. If they suck your blood, they are good for a few days up to one month. So you might have to record multiple nights to make sure.

Check your body as well. If you see random red spots that look like tiny bites, that's a sign too. Altough it depends from people to people and their skin reaction.
