Play it blind the first time. No walk through / hints. Stay off of /v/. Don't be afraid to die or to "suicide run" through an area to scout it. Upgrade gear rather than leveling, and play with whatever gear you enjoy rather than what seems "powerful". If you want ez mode go magic, otherwise only get enough attunement for one or two spells / miracles.

Get a fucking bow.

Samefag here, don't ever "grind", it's not worth it as you can finish at soul level 1 if you git gud. After beating it once, watch anything by epicnamebro or vaatividya. Also, stay human / unhollowed at all times if possible, it allows summons from NPCs even if offline, and online co-op is fun so buy a white sign soapstone and leave your sign down at all times. PVP is the real endgame and what the community is all about, and don't forget to wave/bow.

The first one is the best. Play it blind or you'll ruin your experience for yourself. Try every boss solo at least one to three times your first play through. Summon Solaire if you need help and if he's available. He's a damage sponge for most bosses but a newbie's best friend during the Gargoyles and OS. Keep your Humanity as much as you can. You get two types of humanities, one next to your health which drops when you lose your souls, spend those as Kindling when you can. The other, item humanity, save for when you need it. You can only summon allies and be invaded when you're Human. I would get the online-fix mod if you want the true Dark Souls experience. Try cutting off the tails of large draconic enemies. Learn to Dodge and parry or use heavy armor and tank + spank. Sorcery is a crutch; if you make a sorcerer don't just rely on it. Miracles start off kind of shit but you get some really fucking good ones later on if you wanna do a cleric/paladin.

Dark Souls is pretty fucking amazing. Challenging as hell but solid in every possible way. If you want more updated graphics then don't be afraid of trying DS2 or DS3. They're in the same universe but not linear.

Another amazing game I recently found is Neir Automata. It's not as hard as Dark souls but the most fun I"ve had in a while. The graphics are gorgeous and the music really sets it apart. In fact, I've never heard better music in a vidya game. Also, pic related is a constant feature in the game.
