Doctorfags

I was in an auto collision, had an MRI and an orthopedist who specializes in spine and neck injuries says I have a protruding disc in my neck. She prescribed me meds and wants to perform a cervical epidural steroid injection. This freaks me out. After some research it seems these are risky lucrative options.

Has anyone had one of these? Any feedback or advice would be great.

Let it happen.
What could you do anyway.

Also, accept life, smartly.

for a start orthos =/= neuros which is who you would be the specialist your gp would send you to. Disc protruding won't be fixed with steroidal injection, it will just reduce the inflammation.
>>
>>733891020

I could avoid the injection, see a chiropractor and go through physical therapy
>>
>>733890500
Don't do it. She's an Obama holdover looking to destroy your life with her tracking chip shit that will rot your spine out so you end up on disability and dependent on liberal handouts the rest of your life.
Go see a different doctor. At least one who respects Trump and believes in America first.
>>
a protruding disc is only a problem in the lower spine

stop being so naive and get a second opinion
>>
>>733890500
I'd not do it. Friends mother was fucked for years after that
>>
Don't do it. Extensive physical therapy and time off is your safest bet. If you can't do that god help you.
>>
>>733890500
I had 2 done after auto accident. 3 limit per year here in US.
There's nothing to em. I got a few days of relief from each. Ended up getting massive surgery anyway, but they will help if your condition isn't as bad as mine was.
Do it. Nothing to it, and helps.
>>
>>733891296

Chiros are snake oil, physios are based in science.

If you want your back cracked once a week forever with no lasting benefit see a chiro, if you want it fixed see a physio

>>733891430

Mine fell and broke her leg. Then she wasn't shown how to use her crutches and she fell and broke her back.

Do not trust American doctors.

LOL@ stupid americans and their retarded medical system. You can't even trust your doctor because you're afraid she'll push some unnecessary and expensive experimental treatment onto you for cash.

I don't know the medical terms because she won't give me the notes until 48 hrs. But that's the best way to describe what she was explaining.

I work in an angio lab where we do these, primarily in the lumbar spine. They have mixed effectiveness but are safe to do with experienced practicioner. Mixed as in help/don't help. Not injurious.
>>
i dont know shit about backs but my leg was out of place or something for a few weeks to the point i could barely walk around normally and a chiropractor fixed it in on session.
>>
>>733890500
Usually cervical protruding discs are not very severe, the steroids are mainly for accelerate the recovery but its not THAT effective.
Also if theres no damage in the spinal cord or the vertebrae then you can recover with exercises to enhance the stability of your neck, see what the chiropractor/physio recommends. I dont know who would you prefer in your country so its up to you

>>733891415
Not when you are in a car accident or you have 70+ years
>>
>>733891819

Except whether you get someone experienced or a complete hack is a dice roll. No thanks.
>>
>>733891861

Op here damn I'm already 70 :(

I'm 26. Feels bad
>>
>>733891520
Not all chiropractors are hacks.

I fucked up my back ready bad one time and it lasted weeks. I went to my dad's chiro. He popped me a couple times and I've never had pain in my back like it since.

I'd say finding a good chiropractor is like finding a woman who still cooks and cleans like the good old days. It's rare, but they're out there.
>>
>>733892026

My dad has said the same thing. I'm gonna have to look around.

Thanks everyone for their information
>>
>>733892021
Welll are you 70 or 26?
Im confused now...

I'm 26. But you said I have the neck of a 70 year old. Feels bad man

Doctor fag here (radiologist) aka I read and interpret the imaging the orthopedist and neurosurgeons order. Consider me a non-bias outsider. Plus we radiologist love to study the outcomes of these surgeries preformed by the above mentioned specialties to troll them by proving the outcomes suck dick and they are largely doing them to make money not improve your life. Thats largely in regard to true surgical interventions (not steroid injections).

Disk protrusion in the cervical spine is uncommon, not impossible. Trauma (like an MVA) is the most common cause. Thoracic vertebral disk protrusion = very uncommon.

Anywho here's the deal. Ive put needles into peoples cervical spine multiple times (usually for CSF samples) when they have gnarly degenerative disease of their lumbar spine that prevents us from going that way. Its slightly more risky but if its done under imaging guidance (fluoroscopy) by someone who is experienced its honestly a non issue. Whatever you found on the internet are silly 0.1% horror stories.

The usefulness of steroid injections is pretty subjective. Lots of different studies on its efficacy with different outcomes. Its meant to be anti inflammatory and therefore be of symptomatic relief not a "cure". People who tell you it cured their protruding disks are medically illiterate but ill explain what likely happened.

Data strongly shows that at 6 month follow up with imaging near 90% of disks have returned back to near normal and the spinal stenosis previously there resolved. Symptoms wise its not 90% showing improvement or resolution but it is still quite high.

Over and over again what we see is that outcomes from non-surgical intervention (physical therapy, stretching, exercise) significantly outperforms surgery. Any surgeon orthopedic or neuro worth his salt goes the non surgical route for quite some time before offering a diskectomy/fusion/laminectomy.

Yeah but you can recover your 26 year old neck
>>
>>733891917
Hardly a roll of the dice, you ask the person who is going to do it how experienced they are.

Thanks doctor. I'll have to verify that the person doing the injection is qualified and experienced.

(2/2)

Steroid injections are not surgery and they are not an "outlandish" option. It may offer symptomatic relief. Its efficacy varies patient to patient (some people feel great others are like that did dick). Its more a personal and perhaps financial choice.

I haven't had time to read a bunch of your extra responses up above so I apologize if I'm missing something or repeating peoples sentiments.

The only thing i care to add is this;

Neuropathy aka numbness/tingling/loss of sensation/objective weakness in an extremity related to disk protrusion that is debilitating is worthy of surgical consideration. Anything that you can deal with is better served with physical therapy and NON opioid pain management. Statistically it will improve for the overwhelming majority of people.

What exactly would a physiologist do differently than all the rest?

I'd strongly recommend seeing a physio before letting anyone stick needles in your spine.
And I wouldn't let a chiropractor anywhere near my neck.
>>
>>733893064

I'm glad you mentioned the bottom information.

I did have symptoms you are describing but they only lasted a few days and they are not debilitating. Scared the shit out of me though. All left side of my body. Numbness in my face hands teeth. Weak grip strength in my left hand. Maybe I had a bad night sleep where I was laying incorrectly?
>>
>>733893416

Thanks anon. Looking into one as soon as possible. What exactly does a physio do differently?
>>
>>733893428

Mind you, I was hit drivers side and I was driving. Old bat thought she had a green arrow as I'm going through a green light. She t boned right into my door
>>
>>733893514
A physio will give you specific exercises to strengthen the precise muscles you need to support the injury.
It's then up to you to do them every day. I have a prolapsed L4/L5 (bottom of spine ) and physio is the only thing that's really helped.
>>
>>733893428

This is just the natural course of these things.

Even crazier is the amount of disk protrusion and level of spinal stenosis is poorly correlated to the patients symptoms. Everyone is different and whats actually happening is likely much more complex than pure mechanics (i.e. lack of space + actual mechanical impingement of cord or nerves). The real factors most likely at play are a combination of inflammatory responses (which vary between people), your anatomy (huge differences person to person with size of spinal canal, course of nerves, blah blah blah), and nature of original injury.

Like I think you'll see repeated by many anons in this thread. The course of action best taken is physical therapy --> physical therapy --> physical therapy --> non surgical intervention with continued physical therapy ---> surgery as last resort.

A few years back, I was at my uncle's house with a bunch of other family members. Some of us had made our way up to the master bedroom to look at some things, and I decided to hang upside down from his pull up bar in the doorway.

Instead of hanging normally like I'm supposed to (or could have), I hung from my feet, and literally could not move myself back up at all. So with at least 3 other grown men in the room, my brain quickly forgot about anyone else and decided the best course of action was to drop straight down and put my hands up to break the fall.

Turns out, I never even put my hands up, and I still don't know why I blanked instead of asking someone to help me down from my retard position. I fell straight onto my head, and got extremely winded, not sure I could breathe there for a short while. I was hunched over, and finally got myself back on my feet. It had knocked a few discs out of my spine, and mangled the fuck out of my muscles. I went to a physical therapist shortly thereafter and this woman forced the discs back in place and gave me a deep tissue massage. It completely fixed me, and was simultaneously the best and worst feeling ever.

Yeah I don't know much about your situation, or what would/ wouldn't work for you, but it reminded me of my incident.

I was thinking it would be a huge issue or something, but it was ultimately very basic, I mean literally this woman just sat me up, and pushed those suckers back in place. Not gonna lie, it wasn't comfortable, but I'm the idiot that fell upside down. She then went into a different room with me and I took my shirt off, she put on some sort of cream, like a hot and cold thing or something, and just dug into those muscles. I literally, after that visit, have never felt better in my entire life. It was absolute nirvana after she had finished everything. And I've never had a single problem or any sign of pain in my back ever since. Kinda wanna go back to her now just to get another massage, that woman's an angel.

Not sure if it's relevant, but she seemed Thai.
>>
>>733894848
I think it's worth adding, we did go basically the same day that it happened, like literally right after, that might have something to do with my speedy and perfect recovery, having treated it so quickly.
