Likely, we are just an echo, and all we will ever be is an echo. It could very possibly be that we've been here before, for whatever reason, and the purpose of our existence is just to keep on existing which means self replicating the universe we live in with a nested simulation.

I think no matter how you look at it, the reality you're experiencing is a simulation. It's a simulation by your brain, it's not the real reality but the closest our brains can come up with. But whether the whole universe we perceive is real or not is a different can of worms. The only way to prove it is a simulation would be to hack or escape it. But then if we found a new level of reality, how would we know that level is real, and not another simulation? I think it's beyond human comprehension, at this point in time anyway.
