I'm really getting tired of you kids. No matter where I go online, none of you idiot children have any knowledge of anything before the year 2000: comic books, video games, movies, politics, music, whatever the fuck I try to discuss, I get completely ignored because you puling fucking toddlers don't give a rat's ass about anything which didn't happen last fucking week.

And look what you fucking children have done to my /b/. There was a time when I could refresh /b/ and always find two or three threads by interesting people with yarns to spin about funny or amazing things which had happened to them. Now I can refresh for hours and find nothing but cancer and hairless fucking little boy cocks everywhere.

I never understood why old people hated young people so much until I got old. Now it makes perfect fucking sense. The only nice thing is one day you mouth-breathing mongoloids will be old, too, and idiot slack-jawed infants will be inflicting their ignorance you.

Fuck you all.

I've smoked a pipe for 20 years. I own two fedoras and I can wear them in a completely unironic way and look good in them. That's what happens when you grow up. One day when your chest hair grows in, maybe you'll appreciate what it's like to be a grown-up surrounded by squeaky-voiced, pimply little turds with zero life experience and infinite belief in their own infallibility.

My real frustration, and reason for my OP, is trying to discuss pulp with kids. With Injustice 2 out, the nerd fora are full of "could X take Y" talk, and discussion of (what they think are) obscure characters. I've had a lifelong love of the old pulps and radio plays -- The Shadow, Doc Savage, Lady Domino, The Phantom, and so on -- and their evolution into the Golden Age of comics. But unless it's fucking Batman or the Avengers, none of these kids has any knowledge or interest in it.

It makes my nerd heart sad that kids today don't know who Fantomas is or the difference between bps and baud or why you used an MFM drive only for backups or how you could detect xbar when you were blueboxing -- and worse, don't give a shit about learning about it.

Fellow oldfag here, cultural history is one thing, but learning about obsolete technology is kind of pointless. I have no knowledge of transistor radios, or vacuum tubes, or how computers read cards with a bunch of holes in them, and I wouldn't consider that sad.
>>
>>733565484
ITs because those problems don't occur as often or we have better ways of doing so and ave found ways around it. Things and times change not everyone can get a total and complete rundown on what happened twenty years ago. You will soon get that or hopefully. Kids of today are rapped up in there own world of horseshit. they don't have to deal with your old horseshit.

>>733565878
Well look, let me give you a practical example. A nerd asserted that if Darkseid and Brainiac had teamed up in Injustice 2, they could easily take over the entire Universe. I gave a long list of characters, mainly from the Golden and Silver Ages, who could curb stomp them, from the entire population of Daxam (which is how the Legion defeated Darkseid) to Vartox (whose entire schtick is that he's the Superman of another galaxy, only stronger in every way and with more powers). And was completely ignored because none of the pimply little kids participating have any knowledge or interest in the lore.

That's just one example. It happens constantly. I get tired of being completely ignored like I don't exist because kids are oblivious to and have no interest in the history and lore of their own nerd subcultures.

I may not be able to change the tubes in an old radio, but I at least know what tubes are, what they were used for, and could probably learn to service them in a few hours at the library. Likewise I know who invented the first electric computer (Konrad Zuse) and which of the Steves was the *real* genius (Woz). I wasn't born in the 19th century, but I know who Sheridan le Fanu and James Branch Cabell and Mervyn Peake are and why every nerd owes them a debt of thanks. Modern nerds are woefully ignorant of their own history, and that's just depressing.
>>
>>733566872

That's just it. It's not the trivial minutia, it's the complete obliviousness to the symbolism and archetypal iconography of the genres. How can they possibly discuss what is and isn't out of character for Batman if they don't understand the weird combination of campiness and grimdark grittiness in the pulp stories which gave rise to Batman? How can they know whether the Superman of Injustice 2 is a valid take on the character if they don't understand how the subtext of fascism and "white burden" racism in the pulps helped shape the character? And I don't blame them for not knowing, I blame them for not having any *interest* in knowing.

MFMs were notorious for failure under regular use. They were cheaper than an IDE, but no one ever relied on them more than once. They were fine for backups, though, if you didn't have a tape drive.
>>
>>733567407
Its not really lack of interest is more about the fact that their are so many story lines that its overwhelming and complex that authors or comic writers write on a certain previous story line and expand on it or try to combine everything and end up failing. There is to much to worry about that's why.

I'm thinking more towards the early 80s when you had a choice of MFM (cheapest), IDE (a bit more expensive but more reliable), and SCSI (most reliable but by far the most expensive). It was hard to find a third party hard drive controller which was perfectly compatible, which meant reliability was always an issue for me to begin with, and I had actual flames more than once.

right.... what's your point here?

Humans are still humans, and will still be humans in the future. There were humans in the past, who lived human lives we can learn from.

Do you know what the renaissance was all about? Do you have any idea how different the world would be if that didn't happen?

Also when it comes to technology, sometimes we do learn things from more primitive systems that, due to certain limitations, had to be better engineered in other areas.

Nah, when I put together a new rig, I usually gift my old one to someone who doesn't need much in the way of computing power, or turn it into a mail server or Usernet node or something. even if we're stupid, we've still done a lot of work to get our knowledge. That machine would be built out of human knowledge, and would only be able to design a hammer because humans programmed it to understand basic mechanical principles and thus a hammer.

The hammer it makes possibly wouldn't be as well designed as a human hammer, as our hammers have evolved over time. The robot's hammer would be the first generation of it's technological evolution of a hammer, and unless it can predict every possible future use for that hammer, it will most likely design a better one after experiencing a physical research/development phase with the first hammer.

If it had read the stupid human's wiki-page for hammers, it might have had a better idea about making the first one.

At any rate, humans are stupid, and our world is made of the mistakes and triumphs of our predecessors, which we can learn a lot from.

We still use FM and HAM today so that's kind of a bad example. Lets say it's 100 years into the future and we have just developed superhuman AI at this point. The entire human race is instantly wiped out, along with all of recorded history. Would the loss of all of that information matter to the AI?
Let's say its today and society collapses. We wouldn't pick up replaced technology and begin using it. We would go right back to using the latest.
>>
>>733572932
>old technology becomes irrelevant to the grand scheme
I really don't see how? My house is mostly full of technology from the past 100 years. There are newer versions of pretty much all of this stuff, but nothing I have is obsolete. Actually most of it's worth more because it's vintage and was built to a higher standard than things are today.

19th Century:
House: slate roof tiles, windows, sturdy doors, fireplace, bathroom, kerosene lantern (seriously awesome piece of forgotten technology)

20th Century:
most kitchen appliances
electric lights
gas heating
95% of my music equipment (guitars, basses, electrian piano, synthesizers, drum machines, samplers, effect pedals, amplifiers, mixing desks, microphones)
all the speakers in my entertainment system
cutlery/utensils

21st Century:
Computer/Internet
LED TV/Monitor
Smart Phone
Loop station and two digital effect pedals (music equipment)

The only thing my newer tech has replaced is a multitrack tape machine and dictaphone, simply out of convenience. Tape certainly isn't obsolete and I still use tape echo machines for their characteristics. Really, my multi-track recorder is more 'future-proof' than my computer. In 50 years you'll still be able to record onto a reel and get that sound, where as my fancy computer probably won't be usable 10 years from now.

I think it's worth mentioning that most music you hear today is using sounds made by what you're calling 'irrelevant' technology

I don't remember this pasta and I have been here over a decade.

Maybe something I said today, or some other day promoted it. Have a very happy day OP. There are actually some people here that don't even know what 'OP' means. I have seen them.

There are still those like you posting. We just ignore the obviously retarded and childish posts. Sometimes I even try to help. Sometimes I can't help myself and actually have to let them know just how retarded they are. Sometimes, most of the times, we just don't post.

Yeah, sorry anon, but if society is collapsing in the most basic of ways, we're at least not going to be using anything remotely cutting-edge that relied on then-contemporary society to function. If anything, there will be a buffer of what technological tier would be viable relative to what's current.

As in, if society collapses and all electronics are fried, and the majority of fabrication plants, factories, mass agriculture, power generation facilities, and supply chains vanish
>and
the majority of people don't know how to build an electromagnetic generator like they know how to browse the internet on their phones, we're going to go back to using fire, the remaining simple tools, and manpower for a bit.
>>
>>733575200
exactly. Just like the dark ages after the collapse of the Roman empire.

>>733574213
seriously, what cell phone provider do you think you're going to go with post-apocalypse? New technology would quickly become useless without infrastructure, plus most of the population knowing shit all about electronics
>>
>>733576032
I read an interesting article recently about the effect of the Dunning-Kruger effect on young people. Psychologically, they've begun thinking of the ability to look something up as something they understand. So because they can access a Google search on their cellphones, they unconsciously believe they know everything Google can access. Their *actual* knowledge base is virtually nil. If the cellphones stop working and Google goes dead, they'll be completely helpless.

>>733577089
If and when society collapses, it won't be gradual. It will be a contigious series of disasters each triggering the next as the infrastructure fails. Transportation stops first, which stops fuel and food, which stops power and water. Over a period of hours-to-days the water, medicine, food, electricity, phones, and Internet will cease. Do you know the proper ratios to mix black powder? Do you know where to obtain the chemicals? Do you know how to gut a squirrel, tan hides, construct a slingshot, smelt iron, or even construct a solar still? No. You won't be able to look any of that shit up when your life and the lives of your family depend on it.

I know you think your "whatevs" Millennial shitposting is funny and that you're showing your superiority by exhibiting your ignorance, but if a big collapse does happen, it will be people like me keeping everyone -- including you -- alive in the face of a new Dark Ages. I'd be hoping to make myself useful enough to based survivalists who properly prepared for the end of the world - how do you think I'd go?

>>733577927
I'm not even a community organizer or radical unionist with a quarter century of experience organizing on a grass-roots level in the face of serious and occasionally violent repression by police and security.

But even I would make a significantly better leader than that anon. Granted, I don't expect myself to do great things, but still.
>>
>>733577978
People with practical skills always do okay. The ability to play music well enough to entertain people has been keeping alive and fed for thousands of years, and as long as there's any kind of social structure left standing, you wouldn't starve -- or at least, you wouldn't starve any more than anyone else.

Incidentally, don't listen to >>733578027 this moron. He sounds like every idiot Millennial who watched Bear Grylls once and thinks he knows how to survive in the woods. I spent an entire year living in a tent and I assure you he'd be dead inside a month.
