It's mainly a work machine, plus video editing and 3D rendering. Those CUDA cores shrink the rendering time down a lot.

I play a few games on Steam, but I made the decision a few years ago to separate work from play so most of my gaming is on my PS4.

To be honest it's quite capable of outperforming the PS4. A part of me keeps thinking I should just build another system and switch back to PC gaming.

You lot just put components together. How about an /actual/ modder?

HP Compaq 8200 31337 (hey, it was 2nd hand and it was CHEAP) (i5-2500, qc @ 3.3ghz, 8gb DDR3@1333mhz, 500gb HD, and a fucking dvd burner which i have used exactly once)
added:
4 gig RAM
2x 750 gig HDD (from old rig (don't ask), too lazy to transfer files)
RADEON R9-270x 2GB
CUSTOM CPU cooler mod (had to cut a part off, radeon wouldn't fit)
CUSTOM GPU cooler mod (1 fan wouldn't fit)
CUSTOM PSU mod (no wires left, so had to splice some for GPU)
STOLEN dell keyboard with a volume knob
3X HP LP2275w screens (yes i know G2G is shit, but the colour reproduction is to die for. Also second had obv.)

Runs GTAV etc. on high @ 5040x1050, so i'm happy

I'd imagine you could find some decently spec'd workstations on eBay that would do you fine if you're thinking of going that route. Professional workstations are basically server grade boards and CPUs with plenty of RAM, plus they should have a Windows license key so that'll save some cash.

There's a couple of things to consider when using workstations/servers:

1) There's probably no PCIe x16 slots, although there's most likely at least one x8 with an x16 connector. This isn't a problem if you're using a single graphics card, but SLI will be out of the question.

2) Any PCI slots will be 3.3V, not 5V. That means that many addon cards like USB cards won't work. In fact they won't even fit in the slot. All add-on cards probably will need to be PCIe.

3) Server boards never come with on-board audio. There's no guarantee a workstation will either.

On the upside:

1) Dual CPUs giving you the option of a lot more cores & threads than an i7 can provide if you have the cash.

2) Lots of room for RAM expansion. My board will take up to 96GB, newer boards take even more.

3) Multiple Gigabit LAN ports

4) Error correcting RAM

Seriously, have a look. You'll probably find a bargain somewhere.

I am pleased with it. Well organised, compact and sober design, noise dampening panels and dust filters on each intakes.
The power led is a bit too bright tho and the NH-D15 looks huge in it.

I know you're replying to me but a psu's life cycle is around 5 years plus if it goes down, it takes half of your parts with it
>>

Yeah you're full of shit on your gta setting. You and I know damn well gta v takes more than 2gb of vram on high on that resolution

>>733530168

Having overhead in the PSU isn't a bad thing at all... Most PSUs run best around 50-60% capacity.
I know my Seagate 850w actually ended up being cheaper than the 600w version. Typically you aren't breaking the bank by going up wattage.
>>
>>733530484
if it has proper safety mechanisms it's very unlikely to take other parts with it

1440p @ 144 hz gaming.

lol.
>>
>>733530447
Have actually considered going after that build, using a server board with all the workings, plus a dual cpu when i was younger, but that may or may not involve hand building a custom case for it that has sufficient cooling capabilities, along with enough height for all the hardware to fit into.. expensive as shit though.

I've built two of my friends' comps with a Define S, and I've yet to try the Define C but I think it's better for non watercooled setups. Glad you like it!

Shame Fractal doesn't offer a premium version with all aluminum and tempered glass, otherwise I would scoop that up in an instant.

GTA is very conservative as far as ram is concerned. I set it to ignore limits, put it /way/ in the red (close to 3 gigs), and it still runs at ~30FPS. Sometimes it tries switch to 60, craps itself and gets choppy for a second, but only every couple/hours.
Look, i'm not shitting you. This shouldn't work this well, but it does.

i've been waiting nearly two decades. all they ever do is stop working, the fix is to replace them. I always keep a spare because I've got 5 machines to maintain here.

specific brands can be troublesome though, like diablotek, not that I'd buy such a brand.

but if your advice is to replace a working PSU under the pretense that it might blow up - I reject your advice, thanks though.

Get a heat proof bowl and pour some mountain dew into it with some glow in the dark paint and goop.

Throw some glitter in so lights reflect off it.

Then put some sparkles on the case that are shiny and radical.

Neon lights are life, gammer rigs are only as good as how dumb....erhm awesome they look!
