if by "pink floyd" you mean really good music, then I'd say we're at a point where you either have to choose between mainstream pop (because it's popular, not because it's good) or you'd have to pick your favorite from one of the thousands of niche subgenres that music has evolved into. so basically
-arctic monkeys
-flume
-alt-j
-any other artist that brings something to the table and has their own identity, rather than this lil uzi/migos/drake/lil yachty/xxxtentation/kodakblak bullshit where every song objectively sounds the same

floyd had their own approach to production.
as a matter of fact, they were responsible for a lot of technical innovations that today's bands take for granted.
bands these days also can't afford to rent studios 24/7, even if the scheduling allows them free access to the studio.

add to the fact that every engineer, sound tech, producer and record mogul wants to change whatever any band records (so that they can claim direct involvement in the project) and you have a playing field that ends up yards deep in crap.

there is no modern floyd, that brand of creative freedom is long dead.
>>

This faggot didnt even pick the bends.
>>
>>733378067
Not the same. Back then there was niche music of course, but this was before the internet, videos, hip hop bullshit that tainted radio play, and there were record shops where people talked about and listened to music together. A Pink Floyd would fail now and vanish into obscurity because they weren't good looking, didn't care about making the songs friendly to singles, and required a level of patience listening to an album and seeing how it all connected together. You can barely get anyone's attention for 3 minutes now, much less 45 minutes to an hour for musical literature. Maybe another time will come when they could exist but it ain't now.

Pink Floyd was kind of the top of the bell curve for what could be done with rock music when you approached it with a mix of freedom and emerging technology. It was at a time when experimentation was celebrated in music. After that the pop trend of the 80's was the slide back down the curve to the disposable crap we have again.

Not saying there aren't artists trying, just that they were a pinnacle and if there's another Pink Floyd it'll be when music has changed so much that they won't sound anything like them, will just be embodying the spirit of taking a medium to it's creative reaches while still being pleasant to consume.

You know, I never understood why people hated Pink Floyd.

Is it just because it got popular and people like to say "Pink Floyd" to sound cool? Because once upon a time I went out of my way to go listen to a bunch of songs done by Pink Floyd that almost nobody could name at the time, since the years in which they actually came out.

I liked it. I just don't understand.

>>733382948
floyd were :
during the syd barrett years, considered a jazz/blues fusion band

and during their gilmour/waters years they were considered a progressive rock band, which is the label they still carry.

what made them popular was that in an ocean of mediocrity they produced intelligent/innovative music. in reality, their following is not that huge, certainly not large enough to classify them as popular.

and outside of a couple of songs off a couple of mid 70's albums and then the wall in the 80's very little of their stuff gets airplay.

i know the different line-ups and their respective sound/genre/whatever, although their early stuff is usually regarded as psychedelic rock. the piper at the gates, and shiat.

suggesting that the late 60s and 70s were decades that produced un-intelligent un-innovative music is probably one of the dumbest things i've ever read.

it's the most boring, uninspired shit ever recorded. i don't feel anything listening to it. if you tell my grandfather, who has no idea of music or art whatsoever, tell, he should make some music, he would do something like pink floyd. these people must be the most boring musicians of all time.
>>
>>733389144
>it's the most boring
>uninspired
>I don't feel anything listening to it
>he would do something like pink floyd

Boring how? Why does it sound uninspired, what specifically is it lacking? Do you just not like that style/s of music? Why do you hate your grandfather?
>>
>>733389144

hurdur you need to take more drugs, then you'll get it
>>
>>733389421
>what specifically is it lacking
heart and soul. fun. depth. it's kind of conservative in a way, not wanting to surprise the listeners in any way. but it's also not "cozy" or lulling. it's like music for people, who actually hate art in general, because it makes them anxious or whatever. i never thought once, that something significant was happening, when i was listening to one of their songs (excluding first two records)
>Why do you hate your grandfather?

Anon, that doesn't explain anything. What the hell is "heart", what's "fun", what's "depth" to you?

>not wanting to surprise the listeners in any way
I feel like Any Colour You Like, as one example, is surprising the first time you hear it, because it's all over the damn place, but that's just me.

>also not "cozy" or lulling
Another "pop" song is Wots... Uh The Deal. Pretty relaxed.

>it's like music for people, who actually hate art in general
Alright. I don't understand, though. What's art?
>because it makes them anxious or whatever
That sounds like a rationalization. I've listened to all kinds of genres and enjoy all kinds of music- music does the exact opposite of instil anxiety in me. I've never been made uncomfortable by music. Even death metal is fine every now and again. The only reason I'd listen to Pink Floyd is to get something out of it I can't find elsewhere for the moment. It might just be that I need/would like to hear a specific arrangement of chords again, because it sounded nice, and I'd rather go to the source than listen to a remix or a clever cop by another artist (yet).

>i never thought once, that something significant was happening
Fair. But what you're saying is that you never thought something significant was happening. Pink Floyd isn't godsend, yep. But why? What makes it particularly, exactly bad, besides just feeling like it was bad? If you can't explain that... I can't really say I know why Pink Floyd is bad, or why you think it is. Is it the progression? Is it the experimentation? Is it the speed of the songs? What is it?
>read again and then fuck off
You said your Grandfather would make Pink Floyd, and you apparently hate Pink Floyd, so by extension you believe your Grandfather is only capable of doing/being what you hate. You essentially said you think he's boring, uninspired, and shit.

see, you want to argue about art and have absolutely no idea about it obviously. these things are not easy to grasp.
>Any Colour You Like
just listened to it. grandpas trying to be edgy. still boring as hell
>Wots... Uh The Deal
sounds like one of the most boring beatles song ever
>What's art?
yes, you are the typical pink floyd listener, who wants to have the definition of art first, so he can see, if it fits. art is about emotion and new experiences
>That sounds like a rationalization
it is
>music does the exact opposite of instil anxiety in me.
so, what are some other bands you like?
>Even death metal is fine every now and again.
that is in fact a very boring and conservative genre
>I'd rather go to the source than listen to a remix
what is that supposed to mean?
>Is it the progression? Is it the experimentation? Is it the speed of the songs? What is it?
it is the attitude/mindset, that shines through every piece of art. in this case, it makes me feel like these are people who have a nine to five job and a house, yelling at their wifes, about how the food is bad or at the neighbors kids for being too loud. who pay tax and hate everyone who isn't as hard working and boring as them. it's people who hate change and questioning themselves and "the system". like old people.
>so by extension you believe your Grandfather is only capable of doing/being what you hate.
no, what i said was: my grandfather has no idea of art. but he would never decide to make music all of a sudden.
>You essentially said you think he's boring, uninspired, and shit.
but he's not an artist. he doesn't have to be inspired
another thing with pink floyd fans is, they are easily insulted, when it comes to people not liking them.

>you want to argue about art and have absolutely no idea about it obviously
If these things are not easy to grasp, maybe it is because they are steeped far into the realm of subjectivity, and for you to communicate these things effectively, you need to be able to dictate them in a more objective and tangible manner.

I can't read your mind or feel what you're feeling- you need to describe that to me.

>you are the typical pink floyd listener
>who wants to have the definition of art first
>so he can see, if it fits
I was asking you that question to see where exactly your definition for "art", fit. Because I'm not you, and again, as not being you, I don't understand why you would not like Pink Floyd, or why you would suggest that any form of music is suddenly not art (and then by extension not... music?). I'm not defining art, it isn't my definition for sure. If art for you is about emotion and new experiences, then literally listening to Pink Floyd even once makes it art, because even if you hate it, you feel a strong emotion of dislike and you gain the new experience of having had to have the displeasure of listening to Pink Floyd.

>that is in fact a very boring and conservative genre
This has to be bait now.

>what is that supposed to mean
I would rather listen to the original song (source) of whatever it is I want to listen to, than another remix. A remix. You know, a re-mixing of a song?

>it is the attitude/mindset, that shines through every piece of art
That's fair. All you had to do was say this.
>it makes me feel like these are people who have a nine to five job and a house
Except I absolutely don't understand this. What? I think you're just confabulating some feelings from the pretentious people who like PF because it's "mainstream" and praise it like it's a gift from the heavens. It reads that way.
>>
>>733392442
>my grandfather has no idea of art. but he would never decide to make music all of a sudden
Well, that's not what you said.
>>733389144
>tell, he should make some music, he would do something like pink floyd

>but he's not an artist. he doesn't have to be inspired
Doctors don't have to use surgical tools. But it often makes surgery easier when they do. Artists don't have to be inspired. But then, they're not artists, they're just people who "made" art, usually really basic art, but art nonetheless.

>another thing with pink floyd fans
Good thing I'm not a vapid blank slate, then. I'm not upset that you don't like Pink Floyd, I've just spent a very long time hearing people parrot "PF sucks" without any real explanation than "because". I'm curious, because I've usually never gotten any other kind of answer.

Art:
1 The exercise of skill acquired by experience, study, or observation.

2 The conscious use of the imagination in the production of objects intended to be contemplated or appreciated as beautiful, as in the arrangement of forms, sounds, or words.
>>
>>733393520
>steeped far into the realm of subjectivity
art is exactly that. expression of the subject.
so you want a scientific evidence and formular for these emotions? this statement says so much about you and how you don't get what art is and still want to be part of it for some reasons (like pink floyd)
>and for you to communicate these things effectively, you need to be able to dictate them
yes, to communicate them. but not for making and understanding these pieces of art.
>I can't read your mind or feel what you're feeling- you need to describe that to me.
there is no need to do this. we have art for it.
>why you would suggest that any form of music is suddenly not art
i'm not going that far. it's art. but boring and by people who have the wrong attitude towards it
>because even if you hate it, you feel a strong emotion of dislike
no, that never happened. it just bores me. like absence of emotion. plus PF sure didn't intend to express the emotion of hate
>This has to be bait now.
nope. death metal bands always focus way to much on the technical side of guitarplaying. they lack emotion, so they fill it up with playing the guitar very well and doing things, that are hard to play and think, by that, they have made something of artistic value. they haven't. they just practiced a lot.
>A remix
i don't get, what you want to say in this context? are you trying to say, that todays music is only copying the old stuff?
>I think you're just confabulating some feelings from the pretentious people who like PF because it's "mainstream"
no, it's the music itself, that makes me feel this way. it's just too much playing it "safe" or even wanting it like that and promoting it
