I can beat that. My first modem was a 110 baud teletype machine, complete with rubber acoustic couplers for the bakelite telephone receiver. It didn't even have a monitor, just a printer. I used to call up the university mainframe to play Maze of the Minotaur. If I wanted to use a different program, I'd have to call the computer science department and ask them to please change the reel.

On 9/11 I remember exactly where I was, because I had gone down to the computer shop to pick up my computer, which had been in for repairs. Every computer was watching a different news station feed, and the first thing they said as I walked in the door was, "A plane hit the World Trade Center!"

I was baffled why everyone was so excited. I kept trying to get my computer back. Then a second plane hit and everyone lost their minds. It took me 30 god damned minutes to get my computer back, and only after asking them whether the plane had hit the back of their fucking store and, if not, what was preventing them from getting my fucking computer.

I was in a hotel room in Greenville, SC. I was getting ready for work. I was working for a large Burger King franchise at the time, and they had me going to different stores that they owned to help train managers. I remember that being the slowest lunch shift I'd ever seen on a weekday. It's like the whole world stopped and gasped. I think we all know now that it wasn't Iraq... but I think we pretend that it wasn't an inside job because we don't want to believe that our own government could do that sort of thing... The sorts of things that ruthless, blood-thirsty dictators did.

Yeah, can still smell it...

Did you ever use a telecopier, with a mimeo-like rotating drum, you plugged a phone handset into it and sent copies of a document to somebody with another machine plugged into his phone. An electric spark from a needle in the receiving machine made a burn mark in a white clay-based coating on the paper to reproduce, more or less, the writing on the original. Took about 2-3 minutes a page.

white dog shit
a product of the 1970's,white dog shit was everywhere! it was all over the place because once upon a time high quantities of chalk were addded to tins of dog food therefore when a dog would take a shit after a few days in the sunshine the poo would dry out and eventually turn white. nowadays pet food manufacturers don't use chalk in their food and this is why we don't see any more white dog shit lying around.
bring back white dog shit it's so nostalgic.

My mother smoked four packs a day when she finally quit. She would light up as soon as she woke, then chain-smoke one cigarette to the next all day long. There were multiple ashtrays in every room including the bathroom and bedrooms. Sometimes she'd lose track of whether or not she had one burning and have two or more going, one in each room.

My father only ever smoked two packs a day, and he quit years before my mother did.

To this day the smell of cigarettes make me sick, although I've smoked a pipe for more than twenty years. Very different experience, though. Ah, the glory days when you could light up after a meal in a restaurant, or walking around in the supermarket, or on a bus, or even in the movie theatre. As a kid I used to enjoy watching the smoke swirl through the beam of light at the movies.

I saw an old AES word processing station for sale in an electronics junks shop and bought it on a whim. It weighed over a hundred pounds, the keys were made of wood and bakelite, and the green phosphor screen took about 30 seconds to warm up, but glowed for several minutes after the thing was turned off. I shudder to think what kind of radiation the thing blasted out.

It had an 8 inch floppy drive but didn't have the software with it, so I called AES to see if they had one. No one at AES recognized the serial number of the machine, but days later I got a call from an old woman in Europe who had worked for them for 40+ years and remembered it well. She told me Honeywell-Bull still sold the software for it.

I called Honeywell-Bull and they offered to sell me an 8 inch floppy with the AES software on it... for $300. I politely declined. But it means somewhere in a giant Raiders of the Lost Ark warehouse, in a dark corner, covered in cobwebs and dust, sits a crate of 40+ year old 8" floppies all fresh and ready to go just in case somewhere, someone on Earth needs one.

I remember on my 300 baud modem I used to have to pause typing on BBSes message boards to let the text catch up or else I'd fill up the buffer and knock myself offline. It was until 2400 baud that it could transmit text as fast as I could type.

Incidentally, I was part of a warez group, and one of our members was an intern at Bell Northern. He swore they had a modem in the lab which worked on ordinary copper phone lines, but was literally thousands of times faster than the modems we were currently using. We laughed at him and called him a bullshitter, but it turns out he was right; it was xDSL. They had DSL technology since the mid-70s, but never found a use for it, so it just sat gathering dust.

The old 1501 hippos were notorious for going out of alignment, but they're easy to fix. Just open them up and load up a simple app which reads the track and tells you which track it *should* be reading. Then you can just physically drag the drive head until they track numbers match. I had to do that every six months or so.

Yes, in fact, my first PC was a 'true blue' 4.77MHz 8088 with 640K of ram, a 10Meg HDD and a Hercules card. I was playing with a hacked copy of autocad back then.

Paid $1000 for it, + a 9 pin dot matrix printer.

We flew to Florida from Ottawa one summer instead of driving.

And back then we had an airline called CP Air.

This was a real thing.

We lived out in the country, so we put a 10' mast on our roof with a huge 100+ array antenna on a big rotor. We also attached a 12db and a 20db booster in series. We got about 24 channels on a clear day.

I had Colecovision as well. It was so awesome as it offered almost 1:1 arcade conversions. Zaxxxon etc. After that it was downhill with C64, I always only had a fucking tape and all my friends had disk drives. Ultima 5 was first game to really blow my mind, I played it always at my friend's house. Those days are never coming back and the sense of mystery and wonder. People over the age of 40 don't get triggered when someone abuses us but anyone younger freaks the fuck out and has to write a goddamn blog post about it

Also the faggots at school kept quiet about it because they knew there would be consequences. I couldn't imagine a school environment where fags are celebrated sounds degenerate as fuck.

One of my friends phones had 2 different ring patterns - several short rings or 1 long ring.

I could never figure out why the did not answer the phone half the time it rang, and my friend refused to explain what was gong on - I think he was embarrassed.

This was around 1970.
