It depends on the circumstances- if they ask, say it wasn't worth including on your CV because it was short term. Public school teachers often work retail or restaurant jobs over the summer, if they look into it and ask tell them you thought it wasn't relevant to your qualifications.

Retail jobs tend to have a high turnover rate. Several years ago I spent several months working at a Target, and don't list it in my job history. I was working as a temp at a tech company (hoping to get picked up for a regular full-time position) when the company had a 'downturn' and let all the temps go. The Target job was enough to get by, but they screwed over employees (I was working with coworkers from my tech job, some of them had been regular employees who were let go). The Target store would post hours for the following week on Sunday evening so you couldn't make plans for the week, and would change your hours with no notice. So I worked until midnight on a Saturday night, and a Sunday opening shift called in so they scheduled me without telling me. The early morning Sunday shift set up displays and changed signs, it was easy stuff but I got written up for arriving an hour late. That was the day of Daylights Savings Time, so there were only five hours between shifts. Federal law requires at least hours between shifts. So I told the supervisor, a guy in his early twenties who was abusing the little bit of authority he had, and he added a note to the write-up saying it doesn't matter what federal law says, I have to show up on time. So I waited a day, then brought the note to the store's general manager. She said not to come to work anymore, and that she would make sure I got unemployment. I made more from the unemployment than I had been making working 30 hours a week, and I went back to the tech company shortly afterwards. But it's unclear if I was fired, let go, or voluntarily resigned. I leave it off of work history because it's more of a hassle than it's worth.

found out right near the end that i was still on the roster. i complained, it didn't matter because i was "letting the store down." i left without finding out if i had been fired but i still got my last check.

at this point i don't know if i was terminated

That was probably a manager or supervisor looking out for themselves- they didn't have anyone available to schedule for that shift, so they scheduled you. The problem is a retail store values managers more than employees, it takes time to train a manager so the store would side with the manager.

Since you did receive unemployment benefits you could tell them you were laid off. And that's all you have to say, that you were laid off.
In most cases, if you quit or were fired, you wouldn't be eligible for unemployment benefits.

I don't have any record of giving my 2 weeks. It wasn't my first job but previous jobs were temporary, or informal enough that they didn't require me to give 2 weeks so i don't even know if I was supposed to fill something out.

The shit part is that I already submitted 2 apps without the retail job. So it would be another quagmire to go in and edit then explain why I initially omitted. could try to play dumb

You want a resume that's a page long. Put your college, community service that wasn't court ordered (go pick up a summer job at the park district working with kids or some shit) and put two or three bullet points to fill space about how special you were at school / kids jobs. Don't put meaningless shit like retail that has nothing to do with the job you want now.

You'll get a background check, and if it's a white school where they pay above $50k, a drug test. Fortunately, I work in an almost exclusively black school that is poor as fuck and is basics
Lay taken over by the state, so we can't afford drug testing for every applicant.

You'll be fine. Don't have a criminal background, focus on why you relate so well to kids and you'll have it.

Still mulling it over, but I should clarify that I'm applying to the IT department. No certs, but I have college and experience.

I know that my resume does not need to include anything I don't want it to include. However, the online application explicitly says that I need to list all jobs within the past 5 years. They also claim to do an employment check. I initially figured that this meant calling my old managers on the jobs listed, which is great because they love me. Then I worried that if anything showed I had worked this retail job and failed to list it, that I would be blacklisted in that district.

I may have already screwed the pooch, but I don't have any idea how comprehensive these employment checks are.

They are way too busy to check that kinda thing. And drug tests are unheard of at any school I've ever worked at! That includes ultra-rich private schools and poor as @%#@ public.

It's one of the big failing retailers and it may only survive due to being the only place in that county that provides specific services.

You need to check the laws regarding whether they can contact your old employers without your permission. If I remember right they can't, but that may vary by state. If they ask for permission to contact, say no. Often this is a tickbox on an application form. I haven't worked in Trumpistan for a while and forget the details. But I was needlessly worried in a similar situation once or twice myself.

Everyone has a story, and no one wants to get wrapped up in any he said she said bullshit. They want a couple of sane references, and to know that you were making legal money for the last 5 years. Paying taxes, not a drug dealer, that kind of thing. Nobody gives a shit what some spiteful ex manager has to say about you. If they do, you don't want to work for them anyway.

But just to be safe, don't give permission.

serious question here

I'm currently employed at a school (something to get money while I look for something in my field.. and is full time... and has any sort of benefits.... yea, this job sucks).

Here's my problem:

I'm in my 20's, but I've been working summer jobs since the age of 12 and also worked a retail job a year in high school then seasonal in college. When I list that... it makes me look old as fuck with a gap in my work history.

The truth is:
Camp Counselor- (period of time equaling 9 years)
Retail at 1 place- (period of time ranging 5 years because of school and shit)

I'm afraid that putting this on, because of the super long terms and the fact that no one would just assume I was working as a child, makes me look fucking ancient to a hiring manager, and thus making my work history look all the worse. Is this a justified concern?

Just to be crystal clear, DO list the shit job.

DO NOT give them any contact or avenue to follow up.

Everyone is familiar with shit jobs and bonehead circumstances. The only side of the story they need to hear is yours, and if it's coherent and you seem ok, and you will, it's the only one they will care about.

They want to hire you. Don't give them a reason not to. If you leave gaps in your job history that you have to bullshit your way around, in direct contravention of a simple request, that's worse than claiming it and acknowledging it was a rotten job for reasons X, Y, and Z. Your experience is reasonable. They will see this.

When putting in your 2 weeks learn who your district managers/ Area Directors are along with people from HR so you can tag them on a formal email when you want to quit. Don't just verbally tell the manager, email them and CC said people so you can leave a paper trail and in case there's ever a thorough background check on you on any future jobs it won't show up on your record that you were terminated or that you stopped showing up etc.

Retail is probably the shittiest field to work for extended periods of time so get yourself comfortable with notating everything even on a piece of paper it can save your life.
