In Elementary school I was in a "co-op" class together with mentally challenged kids. We had 6 of them in our class.

One boy was in first class already 12 years old and was mentally on the state of a 1 year old. Could say only a few words like "eat" and "momma". So he pretty much couldn't do anything alone. Not even going to the toilet.
We were in one class together from grade 1 to 6. And he didn't made much progress within this 6 years.

I was in one those classes as well from grade 1 to 4 (German school system. You go to a different school from grade 5 on) and a girl with downs syndrome who lives just a few houses away from me was in that class.
