you see, all transactions are publicly available (thats the concept of a distributed ledger)

if you sell something illegal and receive bitcoin for it, the transaction is clearly visible. Now, if you ever want to transform those bitcoins into real money, you'll end up giving those bitcoins to someone in exchange for money (a person or a bank).
after and during the transaction, that person or bank will know that it comes from the same address which was involved in those illegal activities

this is exactly the problem that the maker of WannaCry encryption virus is facing. its almost impossible to make those bitcoins he received uncoupled from his address, so its almost impossible to turn them back into real money

The next big currency is going to be something institutional or possibly even more decentralized than bitcoin.

The biggest problems so far with Crypto have been that it isn't a real currency. It has a ton of people who are holding for a long time and the number of uses has been limited. The current currency disruption plus the general distrust of authority implicit in Indian culture would make an indigenous digital currency the best approach and if you could spot it early you would be a very rich man.
