Well people already forecasted that like 20 years ago. But AI actually makes progress now and with the first self driving cars expected in the mid 20s and other technological quantum leaps more or less are already happening... Yes, its at least very likely that a huge portion of people now start getting into programming now will be jobless in 2 decades.
Not necessarily because AI can do all the programming but because better, more intelligent tools that can extend their functionality to some degree because AI learning.

Some example, MIT just held a conteest months ago for programs that automatically detects bugs in applications. There are twitterbots that can do some advanced level photo shopping. Some university students created an algorithm which could recognize a programmer by his code (even by the compilation in some cases). Thats only the tip of the iceberg

I work in AI R&D and so many people have no clue what the shit they are talking about. There's a huge difference between these small-time (albeit cool) projects and real, operationalized, stable AI.

We've a long way to go and developers aren't going away anytime soon. We're in an AI hype-cycle (again) and soon people will remember it's not the answer to all of our problems and promptly shut up about it again.

Went to Uni to study Interactive Media Production -- back when social media was in early stages, websites didn't have properly functioning mobile versions, etc.

Fast forward.

It ended up being heavily pushed towards games development, which I did not give a fuck about - I wanted to build websites and create content.

Once I got to the final year and had lost all interest, companies were popping up all over the place with website builders - as shit as they are, people choose the cheap as fuck custom template.

Won't be as bad as it sounds. Yeah, taxi drivers are fucked.
But semi drivers are still needed. Someone has to make sure the freight is properly loaded and balanced and secured. Someone has to sign for the freight, someone has to inspect the vehicle and make repairs/get repairs done as well as regular maintenance. Someone has to deal with the regulations and deal with DoT inspectors. And finally, someone has to be there to catch hell when things go south.

Truck drivers have a lot of work aside from just driving.

But taxi drivers are fucked.
>>

Bet you're just some ginger crip with an ugly wife & horse-face kids. DJ'ing at the local church maybe?
>>
>>732251818
Yes I have. And I'm not impressed. A lot of them have no idea what the truck weighs so they just make guesses.

Guess what happens when they're wrong? That means the truck sits out there in the middle of nowhere until they can get someone out there to rebalance the load. That could take hours or days. Meanwhile, the load is late.... hope it wasn't fruit, or frozen....

Automated warehousing manages nothing after it leaves the warehouse.
>>
>>732252196
Knowing the weight of a truck is as simple as having an RFID chip in the truck to tell the warehouse docking system what it needs to know.
It is way easier to do than you think, the automated driving is a thousand times more complicated and if they can do that, they can do the loading.

>>732251818
In fact, I remember a beer brewery with an automated warehouse. They were telling drivers to go in with their tanks as empty as they could. Once there, the truck was weighed and that determined how much beer they could load.
But wait a minute. Trucks who went in with empty tanks got loaded to the max, then could not fuel up without being overweight. Trucks had to be unloaded and reloaded by hand and that would take all day. The brewery would call the companies and complain, the companies would look at the rules and see their drivers did what they were told.
Every single day, it all turned into a giant cluster fuck because the brewery wanted to load the maximum beer per truck.

After my first time there, I made a note in my book to go in only with full tanks. They might complain, but at least I would never be overweight.

And how is that rfid chip suppose to know how much fuel the truck has
1 gal weighs 8lbs. +/-200 gal of fuel changes the weight by 1600 lbs.
Many trailers are different weights - even trailers of the same make and model. And then there's the 40gal of fuel in a reefer.
Plus a reefer can weight up to 2400 lbs, but it can also carry dry bulk. And the weight is all in the nose, so you can't load it like a dry box.

The real world is not like your database, son. There's variations and variations of variations you never even thought about.
>>
>>732253220
Tetraethyl dithiopyrophosphate (also known as TEDP[2] or Sulfotepp[3]) is a highly toxic chemical compound with the chemical formula C8H20O5P2S2.[4][5] The chemical is a mobile oil that is pale yellow-colored and smells like garlic.[2][5] It is primarily used as an insecticide, but does not damage plants significantly.

More like centuries anon. Market is full of shit programming dweeb-bros. If you have major C++ chops and can crush some algorithms most gaming companies will take you on. Don't give up. Have you got any cool ideas or stuff on github?

>mmo type for my first project
>I need someone for the visuals
>Treat it as a hobby
You should be worried. Unless you're already expecting or you're okay with the outcome of the project being absolutely nothing except the potential experience garnered from the attempt.

This. I studied AI in college. The biggest application will be in medicine and shit like that. Something where you have a ton of data and can be hard to navigate through. People don't give out how they have to fill out Excel pages by hand any more? It will be like that. Machines have very little ingenuity outside there datasets.

Putting a website together is magnitudes easier than coding a game. Should be easy for you to transition back to javascript. Get a plural-sight subscription or go on youtube. Ton's of ways to learn.

You should go back. Microcontrollers are coming back in vogue and people need to learn about Arduinos and Raspberry Pi's. All the hype is about AI, Machine learning and the Internet of Things (which no one really understands)
