Let's use a HP Spectre as an example here. SKU: 5713176

Employee discounts are 10% above what the store pays for an item, and for this laptop it's not much of a discount. Calculating it out, this laptop costs BBY over $1000, meaning they only make a little over $100 profit on one of these. Now the ADH plan (which is now just ADH again, no more services) costs $189.99 for a year. They are hedging their bets here, because if this laptop breaks in the year they would be out about $700 in the end, but odds are they wont have to fix it. And even if we do we can refurbish the unit and get our money back on the secondary market. Not much of a risk in the end.

Now let's say someone buys this laptop and the plan, and then attempts to get it serviced after it has been cut in half. Clearly this is not normal damage but we have two options here. Say no, keep the $300 profit and have him be mad, or lose $700 on a product when our rules CLEARLY state it must be from normal use. Sure he may be angry, give us a detractor, and tell his friends not to shop here, but if we let him get away with that that will just open the flood gates for others to try to take advantage of the system. If we let that happen, what's the point of having terms and conditions at all? We will end up losing thousands of dollars a week because people completely destroy their laptops and we "take care" of them.
