Post underrated video games with great lore and world building
I choose Jak and Daxter (especially because of the two sequels)
>>
>>732197599
Jak 2 had such a great environment
Fuck, all of them did
>>
>>732197599
Sly and Cooper was cool
>>
>>732197813
Yeah recently replayed the three of them on my laptop, really great experience
>>
>>732197738
Wow another games thread just took off, guess this one will be buried rip
>>
>>732197599
>>732197738

The Jak & daxter trilogy still remains my alltime fav game series, god i hope a 4th one is made someday

Too many people shit on this game for no reason. It was my first look into Warhammer 40,000.
>>
>>732198289
Dude, if you think the game was good you need to read the novel.

Firewarrior and Lord of the Night (both 40k and by Simon Spurrier) are some of the best fiction I've ever read.
>>
>>732198289
That was a great game, tau are the best race

From the other thread, kind of related
>>
>>732198663
Um, what i liked in the game were the space marines. That is what really drove my into 40k.
>>
>>732198596
They are good as far as 40k novels go. But my best were The Beast and recent Master of Mankind.
>>
>>732197599
>>732197738
>>732198161
Fuck yeah, loved every part of the Jak games, I loved the third one the most

Not exactly underrated, however didn't had the attention it deserved.

At least, here is plenty of fans.
>>
>>732197939
Care to explain how?
I assume emulator?
>>
>>732202295
Yes, PCSX2, version 1.21, thats where I recorded the Jak screenshots (youll notice they dont look perfect, theres a shadow error coming from the character)
>>
>>732202649
did you get it to emulate without artifacting at a good framerate? also how?
>>
>>732202649
Basically downloaded a version of PCSX2 from the piratebay which came with BIOS prepacked, then updated to 1.21 and configured everything

My laptop is pretty crappy by 2016 standards (macbook pro running windows, 8GB ram, 1 GB Vram) But it gets the job done

Played through the God of War games, Ratchet and Clank, Jak, Sly, Devil May Cry 3, GTA SA, and they all work fine with little slowdown, but some have graphical issues
>>
>>732197599
>>732197813
>>732201483
Apparently they're putting out the games on ps4 soonish.
I'm hoping they do the same for Sly Cooper because Jak and Sly made up the majority of my childhood and teenage years
>>
>>732202731
Framerate for God of War, GTA, Devil may cry is perfect, minor amounts of lag from time to time

Jak and Ratchet and Clank are a different story because the texturing they use doesnt play nice with non PS2 hardware, you can make it run fast, but with crappy textures, but I think its still worth it to be able to replay these without having to fork over money for another ps3 or ps4 for glitched ports of the games with broken animations and useless crap
>>
>>732203099
But there is a fix for the texturing issue you can see on youtube, someone got it working in 4K for those games if you look around

>>732203035
Yeah they are, but with PS2 emulation making such progress, and the history of glitchy rereleases of nostalgic games, and the fact that they will ask us to buy them again for PS4 when I just bought the for PS3 five years ago doesnt rub me the right way
>>
>>732203300
Yea I don't like it either too much. But it's perfect for the small majority that don't have a gaming PC and haven't bought the remastered PS3 version. I came in at the end of the PS3 so most of my ps3 games are the really big sellers like infamous and Skate 3
Not much of a market, but I guess I'm the target audience
>>
>>732201744
Which one should I start with?
>>
>>732201744
I love these games so much that I hunted down and bought a hard copy of each game.
Some of my best gaming in shadow if chernobyl
>>
>>732203515
Yeah fair enough, but they could implement backwards compatibility so that old games could just work on new consoles.

This really ticks me off when you remember that first PS3 models had this for PS1 and PS2, but they silently got rid of PS2 at some point, then threw PS1 out by the time the slim came out. Perfect enough timing for their first ps2 rerelease btw
>>
>>732203633
clear sky,
shadow of chernobyl,
call of pripyat
>>
>>732204209
Oh it's a bunch of shit Anon, I'll give you that.
I still have my PS2, but it's still shitty they phased it out. The only good thing to come out of those stupid rereleases they did was that it brought down the prices of things like ff7 and MegaMan Legends in my town. Ff7 used to be like 80 bucks and MegaMan Legends was in the hundreds in terms of prices, but the minute the PS3 started selling rereleases they dropped tremendously.
Then again, I live in the middle of nowhere so that may have something to do with it.
Anyway, I agree, there are things they could've done differently
>>
>>732204560
Yeah, same thing with me
I grew up in the UAE, where games price points were beyond unfair. Used PS1 games cost 3 times their original retail price, when they would cost 5 bucks if sold in the US or UK.

And people have no choice but to buy it because its so rare, so piracy isnt looked down upon in those regions
>>
bumping, both of these have great environments
>>
the Legacy of Kain series from:
Legacy of kain Blood Omen
Blood Omen 2
Soul Reaver
Soul Reaver 2
Legacy of Kain: Defiance

I love the story, the only issue is later on in the games i guess they were trying knew things with gameplay and the camera angles so it gets very iffy.
>>
(so many parts in the series just gonna post only this one)

>>

FFS I played the everloving piss out of this and VJ2, got Redhot Rumble, which was an entertaining fighter, but I missed out on the DS game.

I had VJ1 and 2 down to a science, and art

>>
>>732197599
they fucked up the lore and world building in the sequels. the geography couldnt have changed that much in just 100 years. jak 2 and 3 were a mess that stained the perfection of the first.
>>
>>732209031
You and me both. Unique abilities and look, entertaining villains, unique art. Capcom was stupid for letting this one go. All the games were successes and pretty universally loved. Now they just force deadlines for underdeveloped fighters.

>>
>>732209994
Between them, Rockstar and Bethesda I may still be able to enjoy video games. All the other companies want to follow the EA model that is cancerous, it seems. Although Square Enix did right by the latest Final Fantasy game.
>>
>>732209473
Quite foolish indeed, Clover deserved better, it's unfortunate that the big wigs in moon rune town are a bunch of dusty old fuckers who have no idea what makes a good game anymore.
Reminds me of Konami and pachinko, foolish Japanese corporate overseers

Watching some gameplay of it suggests that it's a road trip/grass simulator with Advent Children-esque characters thrown in.

I could very well be wrong, but I'm not shilling out 300+ dollars for one game, considering I don't own a console

I only say that because they delayed the game to make sure content was done, rather than rushing it. As well as DLC that was REAL DLC. I don't play the FF games (only 13) but they got that much respect from me at least.

>>732210146
Cant enjoy rockstar games given their stance on modding. It's really shitty how games became less about having fun and more about... I dont even know what to call it, I cant see any benefit for banning mods, it's like shooting yourself in the foot

Theyve always been banned, its just that modders figured out a way to keep themselves from getting caught

But rockstar are still firmly against it for whatever reason. Does'nt make sense to me no matter how I look at it, considering Skyrim's popularity with mods

This game had great swinging mechanics, combat upgrades, and boss fights. Too bad the missions were so repetitive.
>>
>>732210565
>>732210890
I have a theory on this. I think GTA V and Batman Arkham Knight were both deliberately sabotaged on PC by their devs at the behest of Sony and microsoft in order to keep consoles in the limelight verses PC's.

Imagine if Arkham Knight came out not broken and fucked up on release, that would have been a storm too big for sony to deal with, so they covered it up.

Honestly thats the only way I can make sense of why the graphical options were so limited. Disabling ambient occlusion and fov in that game break the detective mode and make certain objects disappear. I have no idea how one fucks up a port like this on such basic things.
>>
>>732210890
Also doesn't make sense because they always seem to go against the grain, which right now is everything is microtransactions and dlc that actually was removed game content. Mods are the antithesis of that. Rockstar isnt even putting a lot out for GTA5 anymore so it's not like they are losing money.
>>
>>732209994
Platinum only ever made the recent Nier Automata.
Drakengard and Nier Gestalt&Replicant were all made by cavia.
>>
>>732211052

Aight, so I gave the gamefags here Viewtiful Joe, Falsebound and Spider-Man 2. Any wrestling fans? Don't know if underrated is the correct word but everyone points to the early WCW games and I think this was better, and of course it's constantly overshadowed by Here Comes The Pain.

I think this is a tremendous lore building game. The RPG elements are, just, there man. All the customization you can do to your character, the places he goes, the equipment he gets, the rewards...just immersive. Little buggy though.

>>
>>732212981

All kidding aside, I remember when Superstar mode debuted and I actually thought they were going to make something RPG-like with branching storylines and attribute customization.

It started off promising with picking your parents and the draft, and then they just did nothing with it for years. That's when I realized that EA sucks dick.
>>
>>732213304
Yeah same man. You had an adviser, picked teams and all that. They actually SUBTRACTED features and story options as the games went on. That's EA for you though. You'd think RPG would work fantastic with sports games though. NBA 2K has gotten close but Spike Lee's iteration was hot garbage, from what I've seen of fan opinions.

I think I'm gonna buy the sequel tomorrow, but I'm worried my nostalgia will be disappointed.

Does it have to be this to? Why not just post underrated games? Anyways I definitely think pic related is very underrated. It also has a decent background story to it with a cool looking grey apocalyptic world.

I know a lot hated when shooters were on that grey trend but I feel it fit the world of Killzone 2 really well.

>I guess I wanted stuff with a great overall story

I don't know man for me game stories are so hit and miss even when they are good. Its hard to choose any one game with a truly flawless story. If I am not engaged in a game enough I don't care how good its story is. I need a total package or at least a gameplay heavy game.

Were you ever into JRPG's from the PS1 era? I always felt they had such great world building as you mentioned in the OP. I think I know what you meant by that and I'm pretty sure JRPG's fit this better than just about everything.

Pic related is awesome man. And I only beat it with 2 characters. I really got to get back to it one day because it is a great underrated and underappreciated game.

>7 characters
>cool stories
>fun battle system
>difficult
>lore to enjoy, like the magic lore as an example
>>
>>732219310
Absolutely, games are hard to balance a story with cause it's still interactive as a game.
And yes, Jrpgs have great world building, though I find myself enjoying older ones like you mentioned, 90s

Don't know how underrated this is, but the devs got shut down in 2012, so i guess that's enough

This game was really fun, but a clusterfuck in terms of randomness of what was good or badly done.

But the way they tell the story and eventually reveal it is unlike anything i've seen in a game, especially how they reveal who the real villain is.

Only problem is how clunky that method of telling the story is, it's totally missable, I actually finished the game without getting that part if it the first time, but still really fun, and sets a powerful tone with a revenge plot. I'd recommend trying it

Yeah I never actually was into them as a kid much. But I did like watching my brother play them. As a kid I had this stupid belief that they were way harder than they actually were so I used to avoid them for that.

The problem with games is they need to make them engaging first before a good story can come about. Then they usually have to pace the story since in most games you will be doing lots of combat.

Another good underrated PS1 gem is the first Medievil game. Also pic related without a doubt in my mind. It is my favorite game of all time and I love its lore and story even if I don't yet fully understand it. As a game I feel it is in a league of its own.

I can't see any game topping it for me any time soon. Although I guess it shouldn't go in this thread because it has had tons of praise. It suits what you are looking for though in regards to lore. A lot of developers are in the process of copying its formula these days so it definitely did a ton right. I usually love game threads on /b/.

the thing is that TLF by game standards is a fun game with a very interesting concept, the stage, The Brink, has so much potential. but they shit all over it, the personalities of the heroes are fucked, the lore got destroyed or simply wasnt explain, DARK DAXTER, the game was a let down and it was because of it and the backlash of it the jak and daxter wont come to light again

the whole Jak and Daxter franchise is underrated , when people hear naughty dog the just know the dudebros game uncharted and TLOU and the wannabe gamer normies scream crash bandicoot, jak and daxter is becoming a cult game
>>
>>732222901
I don't think it on it's own was bad enough to kill such a successful franchise, but I think it's the half-life 3 problem of writing themselves to the point that nothing can match the hype.

Jak 3 cemented the story perfectly and ended it in an epic way without need for playing around with it, and the original staff who worked on the jak series are all gone from Naughty Dog. They did try to get a project up off the ground a few times, but it went nowhere, you can find the official art they produced if you search

For whatever reason I notice a lot of Sony exclusive games have this issue. Yet you have tons of 3rd party games many seem to associate mostly with Sony and you also have certain exclusives that will never be forgotten but usually from the PS1 days. Crash games come to mind here.

yeah i know anon, seriously i hope naughty dog doesnt touch it, they dont have the capacity to do this sort of game anymore, the members of the old ND are no in the company right now.
And as i said TLF as a stand alone game was fun i got a good score, but in terms of lore and personalities messed up. fyi TLF was supposedly going to be a sequel to jak3, but the ps3 came out and a faster project was needed, JakX was born

>>732214516

>>
>>732224306
I think it's because of how naughty dog changed and evolved as a company, and how they had a stance to make like 4 good games that tell the story and move one.

Ratchet and Clank is still going on (although most agree that it's lost it's shine) because insomniac have been pushing ratchet and clank games out for years

Jak especially just might be dead, no more sequels or spin offs, because the story is so detailed theres no real way to do that without getting backlash. Also, uncharted+the last of us are making them enough cash. Its similar to why valve will never make Half-life 3:

1 - The hype is too big, it would be a let down
2 - They are making more money by just doing what they are doing, running steam
