Being the only son, I walked into the viewing suite where the body was laid out to see three Goodfellows in full suits and spats like out of a mob movie. They see me and walk out not talking to me. Weeks later I discover my college tuition was paid by my dad doing jobs for the local mob. My father was not a made man but what is called a "supporter" where favors were done with ample exchanges and he kept a day job.

I then went to look at the body. The mortician did a good job. It was strange, I realized I could finally get away taking a swing at his face like I wanted to all my life. But then, that would just add to the drama.

The story is still unraveling and I ended up moving out west to get away from their reach.

Having a degree means nothing if you don't have the attitude and confidence behind it.

I got an Associates in Network Administration. I started at a large hospital system's IT support line resetting passwords and adding printers to user profiles, and sending tickets to actual techs.

I stayed there a year and 3 months ($15.20/hr) and then found a job as a systems tech (glorified helpdesk/small time server support @ $42k/yr) at a smallish company that was mostly online sales. I volunteerd for everything and within 6 months I was one of the project leads on a new store ordering all of the IT equipment, half of which I had no experience with. I was flown across the country and installed it all with the other project lead.

He let me do all of the network config and security cams and he put all of the PCs in place. he quite enjoyed it because he had a nice easy time while I was frantically trying to learn as I went.

Unfortunately that company was bought out and the new management sucked. Luckily I made such an impression at my first job, they sought me out and hired me for a technical operations team and I have been here since (1.5 years) making $60k/yr after being out of college for 4 years today.

I've already outgrown my current job and will soon be a server engineer at this hospital system making $75k/yr as soon as a position opens. Mostly because I made such an impression on the IT infrastructure director by volunteering for everything, training new team members, and making 50% of our documentation that never existed before.
