I too am in this position OP. I ma 29 live in a natural resource state and have been laid off of 4 jobs thanks to the EPA and Obama. I have 4 years of college in petroleum engineering (which equates to nothing compared to the real engineers who are also out of a job and are usually picked before people like me). So now i make 11.50 an hour working as an HR assistant for a company that makes rifle suppressors. When i look at the 95,000 a year i made and compare it to the 11.50 an hour i make now i get really depressed. I lost my car my home my pension and my girlfriend. I wen from a nice 4 bedroom house to living with three college students who are worthless sacks of shit.

Well from the outside yes it looks that way. From the inside it is a flooded market. When the company i worked for went under we had a total of 15 engineers in the facility where i worked (not all PEs but most were). That is 15 people who have worked in the industry longer than i have. So that is 14 engineers fighting for a shrinking position among 11 or 12 companies that are also under financial strain. Now add in the other branches of the dead company and who knows how many engineers there were there and now you have an over saturated market.

I have looked into doing something like chemical engineering but that would take more school which would take more money which is something i don't have. Being white and male society gains from my loss so there are few programs to help me with schooling.

Other than my new job being low pay and simple, i do have a lot of fun there. I get to shoot a lot of different firearms, machine guns and what not. I can have intelligent meaningful conversations with the mechanical engineers though the two fields have nothing really in common other than measurements. It doesnt take a degree to be in HR so i might have an advantage when my boss retires to take her position. That starts at 50k a year, it would be a good start i think.
