Actually went to MEPS with coast guard, was set on going into the reserve. Changed my mind being over an hour from the closest small boat station, enlisted in the air national guard. Is great so far. Feelsgoodman

Because I'm Canadian and plan on joining the army instead. Being a coast guard could be fun though.

How's the pay? And job opportunities once you've finished your contract
>>
I'm Canadian, and I grew up in an extremely harbour related town.
We had a massive downtown with docks, ferry ports, shops, and just a general nice vibe to it.

The feeling of the warm ocean breeze rushing past you as you look out into the almost endless, black sea is as terrifying as it is beautiful.

The knowledge that this is the same sea that thousands, possibly millions, have looked at, in the same area you are standing, is shocking.

The movement of a dock floating on the water. The sway of a ship at sea. The tug of a fish on your line. The rope cutting into your hands as you pull up a crab trap.

All these things got me hooked on ocean life, and, though I am planning on going off and becoming a biomedical engineer, I would be honoured to help defend my nation at sea in the Navy if I, for some reason, can't be an engineer..

Currently active duty E6 in the CG. Been in for 10 years, and have enjoyed it so far. I've been able to live and travel to places I most likely wouldn't have otherwise. Steady pay, and TA paid for my biochem degree. Can't compare it to another service bc this is the only one I've joined.

I did, and it turned out to be really shitty. Recruiter didn't like my choice of rate so he fucked my paper work and so I don't qualify for GI Bill, he didn't give me my signing bonus, the yeomen lost my training record 3 times, and my medical record 5 times; my CO reprimanded me for not getting qualified after refusing to give me the exam board I requested multiple times (which is ALL I needed to finish the quals), and when I tried to get my DD214 for discharge, nobody seems to know who the fuck I am. I love the theory behind the CG but man are they fucking shit. Never mind the fact that they will only run SAR missions then wave height is under 3-6' and winds are below 50 knots, but hey guys, let's do a couple hundred boardings this weekend while the boat is tied up so that our work hours aren't counted towards underway time so that we can make you do 18+ hour days back to back without hitting the commandant's fatigue policy.

Sorry OP, but you done goofed.

Soldiers are the biggest retards around....and NO idiots, this isn't bait.

>go fight a war or stop an "evil" organization
>organization was trained and supplied with weapons by same people telling you to kill them
>old men stay home safe in mainland murica while you fight and die
>same old men get medals/commendations/promotions and/or rich
>you either come home crippled for life or in a box, better dead cause veterans get treated worse than niggers on welfare
>"evil" organization just keeps on going...maybe a name change but that's about it
>ready for the next fresh batch of recruits to keep the cycle going

You should try thinking for yourself anon, don't let other people dictate to you whom to hate and who to kill (or get killed by) You only get one life op, don't waste it being a tool for someone else's agenda.

>>
>>731965151
lol idiot. DERP HERPA DERP. YOU IZ PAWN.

The military doesn't need a bunch of retards. While you can certainly find them all over, it's no different than civilian life.

Enlisting alone requires a bachelors. And from there the types of jobs you can choose from is dependent on your ASVAB score.

Then if you want to go officer route you need a college degree. And once again, you have to test through OAR and possibly ASTB-E if you go Navy/Marines or Air force route.

The military is comprised of every job imaginable that you would find in the civie world.
You can't have "unthinking drones" to do 90% of the jobs required.

More often than not the only retards are fresh out of highschool Mexican/trailer trash white people in the marines and 11b's in the same category.

Right now talking to Navy OCS and I need to take an exam that's centered around physics, calculus, college level reading comprehension, mechanical engineering and the likes.

The biggest thing about this shit argument is it was my mindset too at like 15 when my "friends" all smoked weed and got shitfaced all weekend long or the mindset of wimpy beta "art" students in college.
>>
>>731965589

Good shit anon. I actually haven't spoken to marine OCS, I spoke to Navy and have been in talks with Army as well. I suffered some injuries to my knees and ankle lately so I've been pretending I'm busy while I'm healing, trying to delay MEPS until I can get back on my feet.

I've thought about marine corp but unfortunately too many buddies who were marines have convinced me I shouldn't go that route.
How was the OAR?

Thing is, no matter what your educational qualification is, what the military ultimately needs is people willing to follow orders without any question whatsoever, no matter how questionable such orders might actually be.
You can't really become part of the military without submitting to whoever is of a higher rank than yours.
So: yes, you end up being a mere pawn.

Its true, USCG isnt part of the military, its homeland security. Yes its one of the more relaxed branches, but it has to put up with its own shit. In all seriousness, I was 11B but my biggest word of advice to those interested in joining.. Do your research, not just which one has the highest bonus or what your recruiter is trying to "persuade" you to do.. Look at something you're interested in and what advancement/specialized training the military will offer you. Look down the road after your service and see what opportunities you would have in your chosen field.

Ah man get well soon. I gave myself patellofemoral pain syndrome (temporary) like, 2 weeks before MEPS. Maybe just suck up the pain, go to MEPS like there's nothing wrong. Only do this if you KNOW your condition is temporary. I started running like 10 miles a week at fast speeds and going uphill without ever working myself up to that. So I overtrained. DO NOT overtrain.

By OAR do you mean the ASTB? Actually I think the ASTB has the OAR at the beginning. I did okay on the OAR. I wasn't prepared for the math greatly, but when I got my scores back I was surprised I did as well as I did.

They used my ACT score in lieu of an ASVAB.

>>
>>731966538
You end up being a mere pawn to anyone anywhere who retains higher standing than you socially/economically. etc.

You are allowed some leeway in the civi world by being in the position of allowing yourself to "quit". It doesn't make it any easier.

The way I see it at least with the military it's in your face and concrete.

I'm 24. Have been working since I was 9. First for father on his construction/finish work jobs, then under the table at restaurants, then in high-school and college in offices.

You are always someones bitch, and you always do shit you don't like at risk of losing your job or benefits.

Is the military a bit more strict in that sense? of course. But nothing too out of the ordinary.

People always have this misconception through films and music that there's some whacky ebil general trying to send thousands of young boys to their deaths for the hell of it. Well they're not. Sure there's politicians and business giants that don't give a rats ass what happens but the hierarchical system serves to safeguard those troops.
It's in no ones interest to have a massive loss of life or a group of well trained armed men mistreated both physically and emotionally.

That also includes enemies.

Only in military contexts you're asked to put your life on the line ("and for what?", I might add). It's really not the same thing.

>the hierarchical system serves to safeguard those troops
Like the top brass actually put the soldier's life and/or well-being before whatever pretext for war they have going.

>It's in no ones interest to have a massive loss of life or a group of well trained armed men mistreated both physically and emotionally.
They sure could do without it, but - again - I think it's pretty foolish to believe the well-being of troops is their priority.

So I'm planning on calling up Army again this week and discussing that route.
That's also part of the reason I've considered marines in the past.

>>
>>731968402
The well being of troops is the priority of NCO's and CO directly above them, and so on as you rise up the chain of command.

As far as what you put your life on the line for there's plenty of reasons.
Some people just simply don't give a shit. Some people find the reward outweights the risk. And as mentioned earlier in this thread, you are rewarded in the military financially and through benefits more often than not far better than in the private sector.

I'm actually very curious as to how old you are. Not too make fun of you, but to make a point.

Because when I was in college you actually begin to believe that once you leave that piece of paper is going to bring you miracles and an amazing life. (financially speaking). Unfortunately it doesn't. For the vast majority of kids.
And in my particular case I actually had the opportunity to work for major financial firms and get my series 6, 7 and 63 all paid for so I can begin life in financial services and possibly make some good money by the time I'm 30. But when I thought about the 12-15 hour work days staring at numbers all day just to get to 6 figures, while simultaneously competing against both the markets and all the other kids in my position who wanted that position, I grew weary of it.
I can do that shit when I'm in my 30's.
Even enlistes get great benefits but I'm going Officer route.
I'm going to spend the rest of my 20's learning practical skills, traveling, having fun, getting a free masters degree, earning a solid salary, leading men and women, serving my nation, getting great medical and dental benefits, (gotta fix my teeth), free housing, free food etc.

If I choose to stay because I love it, great, if I don't, well I'll have done alot and gained alot.

If I stayed civie I would spend the next decade wasting away either in the office or on the weekends getting totally wrecked with a bunch of other miserable slobs in the same position.

Sounds like you have your head on straight.. To highlight your first statement about the troops well being, you're absolutely right! Toxic leadership is killing soldier morale and cohesion. It's a huge problem today and is a driving factor behind unit's retention rates dropping drastically. When you do become an officer and lead your first Platoon or Company please, remember this. Take the time to know each of your soldiers and show them you will stand by them in the suck just as much as in the glory. You'd be surprised how much better soldiers do when they see their leadership shoulder to shoulder with them and not back in a vehicle somewhere just talking on a radio or going back to their barracks when it starts to rain.
>>
>>731969571
Good on you for grinding and going through the extensive wait that is applying for OCS. Seriously, if I couldn't do aviation I'd have to go infantry officer. If that's what you're feeling fucking do it. But don't do Army, do Marines. Having been around my Officer Selection Team and going to mini-OCS I can see night and day how different Marines are versus Soldiers. Marines are squared the fuck away as a whole. The Army however, maybe only with their Rangers and Special Forces. There really is a warfighter spirit and fraternity in the Marine Corps unlike any branch. I met with an Army recruiter 2 years ago and he was nothing compared to my Officer Selection Officer. Night and day difference in professionalism.

Seriously going infantry and living that grunt life would be dirty and hard but man that would feel a connection to the fighter spirit that men have had for thousands of years and that would be something else.

Kill.

In all seriousness, people are right about a very large swathe of the military being a bunch of uniformed welfare queens that are dumb as fuck and couldn't figure out what to do with life. That's how it's worked for a very long time.

There is a small percentage of the armed forces that is genuinely competent, motivated, and morally sound. They also do all the work because the aforementioned shitbags do the minimum to get by so they can collect their check.

Unfortunately, the shitbags being the majority, they are also the face of the military. For every decent human being that's there working hard and getting shit done, there's 10 that are worthless oxygen thieves and are best used for menial labor and soaking up bullets and shrapnel.

Army has the lowest required scores. Plainly speaking. They are dumb. And they are second to combat after marines take a position.

Fucking kys. The only thing you do is arrest retarded, drunk boaters for fucking 13 year olds in coastal waters. You beat your dick off to dreaming about Rangers or Recon or Delta or MARSOC or any other real men doing hard operator shit. You fucking wish you could just use that duty pistol on someone. You dream of it until the very day you shove it under your own chin and turn the last 20 years of your existence into a stain on the wall.

I feel like their the blacks like in the civil war you don't send your best out first you let the less important go first and take the heavy fire before you send the rest in

Physically, no coast guard doesnt. But 18-19 hour days, with classes back to back, and watch cutting what little time you have to sleep in half, its definitely demanding. Idk about other basics, but the constant risk of being reverted for even the littlest thing will get to you.

Here is something for everyone that accurately depicts how the CG came to be.

Every service branch has a different mission or task. You can say the Marines are first into an area IF you're speaking about a amphibious assault or objective on a coastline.. other than that.. The Army and Marines have gone in together or just behind the Army.. OEF and OIF... oh, and ODS and Syria....
>>
>>731970349
The army infantry no not really. Just army has a lot of different MOS that dont get infantry basic training. Just marines train everyone the same there boot camp all Get the same infantry training. The only ones in army that get training like that is infantry.
>>
Sometimes I wish people would stop their dick measuring contest of "which branch is best" seriously all has their pros and cons.
>>
>>731970513
And, believe it or not but the Infantry actually has the highest average ASVAB scores than any other branch... look it up, doesn't matter how "dumb" or "smart" someone is... Men like fucking shit up and playing with guns....

You're dumb ass is gonna wind up in RAMP, I can fucking see it. I hope to god you get one of the BM2s as an assistant CC, they're both out of their damn minds.

In all seriousness, you're in for a rough time. I think the only branch with a tougher boot than ours is USMC. Don't be afraid of remedial swim, it was actually a pretty good time, and if you're gonna volunteer for a company job, go for laundry duty.
