being a scientist is an occupation. you train in a certain discipline, and you get a job where you apply your expertise. arguably, 'scientist' is a social construct insomuch as it is more a blanket term. most people wouldn't understand what any given scientist does if they were told straight out. so, yeah, scientist - for convenience.
