I installed arch on my old machine to try and build a very lightweight system for running rfactor the racing simulator game. I had it all running sweet apart from one crucial thing, I couldn't get forcefeedback going properly for my wheel controller. I had the same problem on suse linux so it wasn't arch's fault. I enjoyed going through the arch install process, it was enlightening!

Windows 7 for obvious pleb reasons.
>guy with arch linux wants my pen drive
>throw it over to him
>oh no, the pen drive is not detected
>i'll have to mount it manually
>oh what's this, oh no i lack a driver for this one
>ok i'll write a driver so i can use it...
>continues to write a custom driver for something like an hour and gives up to start an ubuntu to transfer the data there
This happened this week.
>>
At work I always use Linux because it is simpler to install dev environments and more configurable in terms of desktop environment.

At home I use windows 7 because all I do is play games, watch videos and web browse. I don't feel like having a dual boot to switch every time I want to play.

That person is a retard. It was probably an NTFS partition in which case they just need to install the NTFS-3g driver which is actually part of Arch's main repositories meaning it takes like 2 seconds to install with
>pacman -S ntfs-3g

That said, if they were just mounting it then they wouldn't even need this package. The linux kernel itself comes with an NTFS driver but it only supports read-only mounting (the NTFS-3g driver works perfectly but it's FUSE based and won't be added to the linux kernel itself).

tl;dr: That dude is probably retarded and trying to show off.

Arch is actually really easy to use but retards who can't into computer tend to install it to show off and just embarrass everyone when they can't figure out basic shit.

Ran mint for years. Played with shit loads of other distros. Just had to install windows 7 on a extra drive i had so i can use software like autocad, fl studio, vegas.....all that good shit. Plus linux hates my video card for some gay ass reason.

Mint is basically my security suite now for doing dirty shit. Windows is like my sandbox.

It was an ntfs drive, but i sure as fuck enjoy beeing able to plug in an usb and for it to just work.
You linux users always forget about the hardships you've been through already and tell everyone how easy it is to use that shit.
Other occation, same guy:
>oh if you want to install arch just follow this tourorial
<nah m8, i think i'll stay with ubuntu or some pleb tier linux
>ok i can just do it for you
<k whatever
literally 4 hours of him looking at the screen non-stop and writing down commands in a huge as fuck list from some arch toutorial site
>oh it works, look how easy it is
yup...

>>
>>730897896

>>
>>730910710
lmao, seriously stop hanging out with that dude. He is clearly brain damaged.

It's not a hardship to run a single pacman command that makes NTFS pen drives automagically work. You only have to do it once and typically non-retards do it at the same time they're installing the OS.

Installing arch isn't that hard:
>pop the disk in
>chroot over to your install partition (1 command)
>tell pacman to install all the core shit (1 command)
>configure basic shit, time, network, etc.. (literally editing a couple lines in a few text files and running a couple 'systemctl enable/start [service]' commands)
>Run a command to install and configure your bootloader
>reboot without disk in drive

That's basically it. 99% of the time you're just sitting there waiting for packages to download/install. If you want to install a window manager, video card drivers, and some general software then that's really just one more pacman command at the end.

The only reason it took that dude several hours to do it is because he is borderline retarded and doesn't actually know dick about linux.

Just for reference, this is the guide:
https://wiki.archlinux.de/title/Anleitung_f%C3%BCr_Einsteiger
I've had word count the words:
9000 words in this guide, about 60 commands to the half of it (not sure which ones are needed)
So i have a hard time that this all can be achieved with 4 commands. Again, there's so much you don't even consider work but it is. I know the basics of linux, but that's it, i'll have to check how to create a new partition or how much i need for swap and all that shit.

>>730911708
>how to create a new partition
You have to do that shit no matter what OS you're installing (even Windows) and you can do it from anywhere (even Windows, but there are also linux live disks solely for partitioning that are basically retard proof like gparted).

>How much swap
Modern computers with 8GB of ram or more do not need a swap partition.

That guide is huge because it tries to explain everything assuming the reader doesn't know anything about linux. It literally has entire sections on how to turn off and reboot your computer from the command line and it handholds the user by providing commands for reading and editing each text file that they might possibly need to modify. It's also super general so that it covers every possible linux configuration (most of that text won't apply to you because large portions of it are mutually exclusive).

The only tedious part is the configuration which is still pretty basic. Stuff like
>set a locale by deleting a character from a text file
>set an iso character set in the same way
>generate an fstab with the genfstab command
>run a script to automatically test speeds for arch repository mirrors and choose the fastest ones
>install a network manager, do some basic configuration (typically just copying a file and maybe editing a line or two if your network is weird), and start and enable it with a couple systemctl commands.
>etc....

If you know what you're doing then you can do this in a few minutes. If you don't know anything about linux then you're going to waste a lot of time reading on what each of those things are and how they work in linux.
