by weight, most formula is close 50% calories from sugar. Mostly fructose or sucrose. The reason babies are fat as fuck in first world countries is directly attributable to this fact. fructose is metabolized almost entirely in the liver and almost entirely into fat.

natural breast milk contains glucose, which is the brain's natural energy source, most of which never makes it to the liver because it's used by the body (triggers insulin receptors in non-diabetics) and when it does make it to the liver only a very small amount makes it to the VLDLs which ultimately result in obesity.

It's not about how good it is for the baby as much as it is about how bad it isn't for anybody else. If the baby and/or the mother prefer it even a little bit, it's better to allow it because mothers will always want to do it and it only makes other people uncomfortable because there's a stigma against it.

Take gay rights, for example. There was definitely a point in time where legalizing gay martiage would have caused much more suffering to religious straight people than happiness to gay people. But we legalized it anyway, because we know that society is growing increasingly more accepting of homosexuality so in the long run, people will be happier if it's legalized.

The world is also growing increasingly more okay with exposing one's body. Complete nudity is still not acceptable, but one day it will be, which is why allowing public breastfeeding is good. It's the first step towards making people okay with complete nudity.
