I haven't only listened to their big hits, I've listened to all the albums. Some people seem to be taking explaining it a bit off. It's not THAT DIFFERENT from some of their previous work. It just... Seems to be filled with the most passable of the passable from their previous albums.

I liked the eponymous album and Demon Dayz, but everything after that didnt fit my tastes.

I love and adore the original Gorillaz album.
Demon Days is a fucking awesome album.
Plastic Beach made me hesitate for a moment, but it had its redeeming features.
FUCK The Fall. Pompous hipster bullshit that ruined the band for me.

Of course, I took the leap and bought Humanz.


I'm pleasantly surprised. They've attempted to take aspects of their earlier hits, and blend them with more common, modern aspects. Some of the songs are going be to constantly skipped, won't deny, but, hey, it was better than The Fall, and that's all I asked for.

Seriously though, it's pretty good. Not their worst, might be on the same level with Plastic Beach. Charger is s i c c. Submission, Busted and Blue, Andromeda, Saturnz Barz (at least the 2nd half), Strobelite, Let Me Out, She's My Collar, The Apprentice, Momentz are all great. Even Ascension and Sex Murder Party are growing on me. The biggest problem is the lack of a proper hook, like Feel Good Inc or Clint Eastwood or Kids with Guns.

I've bee a big fan of every thing they have done, and I kind of had a bad feeling about this album going into it. Most of the singles weren't grabbing me. They all had a meandering pace, and lacked structure. So they kind of just crawl along. The production was bland, with mediocre beats and anemic production.

I see a lot of fans saying this is like their old albums, and pointing to how all their albums have a ton of guest spots. And yeah, no shit. Gorillaz has always been a collaborative platform. But all their past albums saw most of the songs have the "gorillaz sound" + all the varied guests. Most of the songs on Humanz barely has Damon, and the ones that do, he's often pushed to back, or has very minimal lines. I actually went back and looked at their previous albums just to make sure, and it's shocking how many of Humanz songs are just straight up 90% guest spots, with very minimal Gorillaz. So it's annoying seeing so many fans be obtuse, and claiming this is how all their work is. Maybe in concept, but not in execution. Funny enough, as cliche at "let me out" is, it actually reminds me of a Gorillaz track the most, since the song has an actual structure, Damon has close to half a presence. The rest can't be said for most of the tracks.

I don't hate this album though. For all it's flaws, there is something oddly hypnotic about it. I actually really like the way the album flows together. I just wish all the songs had more to say, and weren't so bland and meandering.

I seriously think fans need to go back to Demon Days and listen again. Yeah it had a very minimalistic sound, but the production had much more weight & was a lot more interesting imo.

So yeah, this is easily their worst album. While I don't care if there is a lot of black culture in their music (has always been true for them), this album lacks different types of influences. Even though crass, you guys are right about the dindu stuff lol. Album is overloaded with the black lives matter melodrama.

Yep. Had a very punchy production, and the songs were tightly written. I personally liked Plastic Beach, but I can understand why some on here don't. Compared to Demon Days, you can see where the project started to get over inulgent. Some of the songs were over the top, and had too much going on. Album is also not paced as well as Demon Days, which feels like a more coherent vision.

But even Stylo, you hear that single and you know it's Gorillaz. Catchy beat. Damon's vocals are awesome. Mos Def (before he became a towel head) fits perfectly in the song. His rapping actually fits in with the beat perfectly. And while I know not everyone likes Bobby Womacks vocals, I think the rest of the song is tightly structured.

Then you compare that to "hallelujah money" or any of the other singles, and it's just so clear that this is not a Gorillaz album.

I'm actually fine with bands experimenting and changing their sound. But then I think, Damon really needs to put himself in there rather then take a back seat to the guest spots.

Well it's a collab album so obviously it's going to have a different sound.
