I live in Madison, WI which happens to be very liberal, and I live in a coop with like 30 other people, many of them being trans. I've known many trans people and have become good friends with some of them and from my experience, all I can say is that there is definitely a correlation of having mental instability/self-hate with being trans. Whether it is caused by an external factor such as being treated as an outsider or if it is an inherent cause of being transgender, i just don't know. I'm leaning towards the latter of the two. I think that being trans is a result of some initial self-hate or depression and the direct response of that is to want to become someone else, literally. It is an escape from the self and what I have observed in 90% of all my trans friends is that they all have some sort of fucked up past and even after they come out as trans and start going through HRT, they seem like they aren't even themselves and that their mental instability gets even worse due to taking hormones which their body is naturally not supposed to produce. They're argument is that they are currently who they are supposed to be and that their sustaining depression is due to being a social outcast, even though they live in a city which openly and willingly supports the trans population and which has 0 hate crime against trans people.
